Ok I rooted my device to install Android firewall to stop some apps from using data in the background but it doesn't seem to have worked cause the apps/services I thought i had stopped are still using data in the backgroung. Am I missing something?

I've also never come across a good firewall on playstore. The best I used was the built in one in the MIUI ROM. It worked all the time.

or maybe I got my wires crossed Android firewall does something totaly different? If so which app would you guys recommend for my needs?

Why not go: General Settings > Data Usage > find the problem app from the list > check the restrict background data option

ive read avast has a good firewall?your phone needs to be rooted though.ive got it but my phones not rooted so havent had a chance to test it out.
