I know that I will eventually end up replacing it as it is old and I doubt there is much benefit in getting it repaired but the engineer in me would like to understand what the issue is if possible. Our washing machine slowly leaks, very little gets on our kitchen floor with the bulk of the water leaking via the drain pipe ending up down our main property drain. This doesn't happen went it is running but while it is not being used with the main water feed to it being on. I don't understand how as I thought washing machines actively drained using a pump as opposed to being gravity drained?

I had a top loading washing machine which was gravity drained, leave the hose a little elevated and it will drain all over the floor.

This is definitely not a gravity drain, the drain pipe exits the bottom of the washing machine and enters the plumbing drain around 500mm up the kitchen wall.

Leaking Inlet valves. Either dirty or not closing properly when not in use.
Shortcut. Turn off the inlet water connection and see if the leak stops if it does it means the inlet valve/s are not closing properly. Typically if you have problems with calcification in your area.
It could be as simple as a piece of fluff caught in the drain pump, allowing water to escape when the pump is not running as well.

there is a debris filter in most washing machines, if it gets blocked the machine starts leaking. whats the make and model of your washing machine ??

I have already done the test by shutting off the inlet valve which stopped the leak of water but will check the debris filter when I get a chance. It is a Samsung Eco Bubble WF0804W8N.

Fixed my Samsung top loader (15 years old)

Problem 1: Inlet valve broke. Went and bought a new one and replaced it myself. A few screws and connectors later
Problem 2: Overflowing the drum with water. This was due to a dirty water pressure sensor. Cleaned pipe of sensor (never ever remove
Problem 3-7: Leaking. Didn’t use plumbers tape on the connectors (noob mistake 15 years ago). Leak at the debris filter. I found few coins got stuck. Forgot to tighten the debris filter cap (noob mistake again). Problem 1. The inlet was in always open position.
