So while I was minding my own business, I got an sms... normally I never read sms and just scan through quickly at the end of the day.

Fortunately I had idle hands so I read it. Turns out I had subscribed to a dating service while not using my phone. Haha probably just some idiot who wants me to reply. But the suspicion has been planted so I checked and lo and behold, a wasp has been subscribed. Fortunately the article on this from Mybb has been rather helpful.

So yeah, at it at full swing again....

Just had the same thing happen. Was on a web conference, phone lying on desk. It beeps - check message:
"You successfully authorised the GlamourBabes service at R20.00 Daily from GlamourBabes. See T's&C's http://www.mtn.co.za. To cancel this service dial *136*5#"

Cancelled it immediately, check bill online, and lo and behold, R20 has been charged! I thought this stuff was optin only?

It is. They will just pretend you opted in via some mobile website link.
