Wasteful Spending

It seems to be an African thing
Only if you know nothing about the rest of the world or history.

Come on now, if you read or knew about any world politics you would know its not limited to Africa but the world in general. Africa just seems to suffer the most at the hands of corruption but lets not be ridiculous and imagine its an African thing when the rest of the world is pretty much struggling with the same sort of thing. I mean just look at Europe and how it was supposed to be this shining example of democracy (as a whole) and now countries are struggling because of poor decisions and corruption.
Democracy is irrelevant. It's simply a method of selecting a government. That's it. It doesn't imply freedom or good governance or even any particular economic system.

You guys keep forgetting: A little corruption and wasteful spending is a small price to pay for freedom from the white oppressor. The ANC still claim the liberation as their own. As long as it does, we're stuck with this narrow minded perception.
Regardless of whether it is entirely rational they have a mistrust particularly of parties that are perceived to be white. I cannot really blame them. That mistrust developed over decades anyone who seriously suggests it should just go away practically overnight isn't being rational themselves.

But what is a good price for freedom? What if the choice was between fiscally responsible leaders and ones who truly believed in personal freedom? That of course is not the choice we currently have in South Africa. Neither the DA nor ANC seem to care much for personal freedom. So it would make sense, all things being equal, to choose the apparently more fiscally responsible party. If things don't take a turn though one day we and the rest of the world are going to wake up in a totalitarian state, one where our freedom was whittled away a bit at a time.

Democracy is a flawed system. It assumes that the majority of voters know and want what is best for a country.
But what is best for a country?

And of course as we can see by looking at other countries some voters are simply loyal to a party. Which could be seen as stupid or as those voters being convinced that party is the best option.

One has to look at the government policy of spending your entire budget or receiving less cash the next year as an issue too. It promotes this sort of thing.

I would try my best to remove highly localized governance. It is inefficient and generally seen as too small to be a corrupt and money waisting part of government but many ones make a hundred. The sort of money that gets wasted here could go to improving roads and other infrastructure, hiring more policemen and civil servants, funding skills training centres and schools but X5's and ML's are much more attractive than a job well done.
