Durban - Thousands of young adults hoping to become Metro Police descended on Pinetown’s Lahee Park yesterday as the unit looked to fill vacancies for the first time in a decade.

Spokesperson Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad said that by 3pm about 10 000 applications had been received. He said 200 successful applicants would be employed soon, a further 200 in February and the same number in August and February 2019. The applicants were responding to a modest advert in eThekwini Municipality’s weekly Metro publication, and the process lasts until November 3.

“In the rush, many are not completing their applications properly,” said Sewpersad. “That’s how much people are hungry for jobs.”

He said the idea was to bring back bobbies on the beat. The last time people were recruited was 10 years ago.
“We want people who will have a passion for the job. We want to change the image of the Metro Police. Some people may want the uniform, or to be in a position to become rich through bribes,” added Superintendent Glen Ndlovu, at the scene. “They may be setting out to get into the system only to be corrupt.”

Sooo ... how many applications will be withdrawn if it is made clear that the gravy train is oversubscribed and these jobs are for doing actual police work, not just feeding at the trough?

Another 200 criminals to be unleashed onto the public.

Nonsense, my brother in law became a metro officer about 5 years ago.
The funny thing he only received a gun last year. The state did not have funds. lol. They should issue like 1 gun between a couple people. He said one time when taxi drivers shot at them, they had to run, lol.
