Fire guts Ballito coffee shop
One of Ballito’s most popular coffee shops was reduced to ashes by a raging fire early this morning.
The Waterberry engulfed in flames.
When the Courier arrived on the scene fire fighters were still trying to extinguish the flames.
Waterberry coffee shoppe owners Peter and Margie Berkeley said they were in shock but would trust God for the future.
“We built this place in faith, and its now up to Him if we continue,” said Peter.
While it remains unclear what started the fire or when it ignited, reports from surrounding residents indicate it may have started as early as 5am.
Fire and Rescue Services arrived around 6.20am to find the building was beyond saving.
Peter said he was grateful for their efforts as the fire was prevented from spreading.
The Berkeley’s also own the adjacent ‘Dolphin Holiday Resort’ with a caravan park, self catering and camping facilities.
“When the fire engine arrived I asked them to first wet the natural bush surrounding the shop as it was clear that little could be done to save our restaurant,” said Peter.
He said the family had been overwhelmed by the kindness of the community.
“I would like to thank everyone for their support and prayers, the outpouring of love has been phenomenal.”
Peter said they now in the process of clearing the wreckage and deciding what to do next.
“We are hoping to rebuild and start afresh.”
Waterberry coffee shoppe turned ten in May and was well known to locals and visitors to the area for its excellent food and deck that overlooked the natural forest.
