So at the beginning of this year I moved to another complex and my parking spot at the new complex doesn't have a roof, which means my car gets exposed to the elements. I'm worried that over time the roof of my car will get damaged by being exposed to the sun. Over the past week temperatures were as high as 36 degrees, that's just too hot. So today I went window shopping with the intention to by a waterproof car cover tomorrow. The car cover I am thinking of buying at Game tomorrow is a Stingray car cover. The price for the cover is about R570.

My question is do you think it's a good idea? Are there things I should know before buying a car cover? I know you shouldn't buy a car cover if the car was resprayed within the past 12 months.

EDIT: Oops! This thread should have been posted under the motoring section. My bad! If the moderators can move it I would appreciate it :).

I would never buy a car cover. A little bit of dirt and dust on the car, with a light breeze and the cover starts acting like sand paper, loads of tiny scratches.

But, that is just my opinion.

Thanks for your input. If I were to choose between the damage caused by the sun compared to the small scratches that will be caused by the car cover, I think I would still choose to have a car cover.

The damage pointed out by heartbroken is very valid, the damage will be worse than just by standing in the sun. Rather take your car for a nice glaze every 6 months.

Waterproof cover also keeps condensation in. Causes rust under bonnet and roof. Buy one of those instant carport things and use a fabric dust cover if you are worried about dust.

I'm in the same situation with only an overhead iron roof mounted on poles.
Fresh winds all day cover the entire vehicle with fine sand.
I agree that the flapping will cause expensive damage instead of protecting.
Despite travelling around often, I can't remember ever seeing a car cover in use,
at any of the homes where the vehicles are outside all night, and some all day.
