ways to conserve your 3gb

BOLLOCKS !

It doesn't matter what you do proxy wise on your side of the wall, it'll save you 10meg at best, which is quite silly.

The bandwidth chewing is NOT surfing, it's big downloads and streaming media - plain and simple.

There is NO way to control that other than minimising your ability to do it !

how do i "minimise" my ablity to do it? chop off a few fingers? maybe a prtial lobotomy. :)
i disagree with your contention that it will save very little. web uses a lot of that 3gb, especially when youre flooded with images and flash and other crap. give me lynx anyday! :) ill try that proxy thing and report back here.

LANSuite 602

I first installed the Software 602 Lansuite to try and reduce the amount of traffic while I was still on 56k dialup.
I have an internal network with a few PC's sharing the internet connection. Prior to installing Lansuite I used to have a firewall from this vendor and antivirus from that vendor, etc.

Now I have one product, which provides me with Firewall, Proxy, Cache, Mailserver, Fax, DHCP, DNS and NAT all in one. Best of all, its not Microsoft.

As SToke said, This thing is awesome, and it really works.

Negatives are that if an image/file is only partially downloaded, then you have to manually clear it out of the cache before you can redownload it.

Positive is that you can define your own internal IP Range and then only allow specific IPS access to the internet. It Rocks.

If all you want is to reduce wasted bandwidth on image re-retrieval, etc, then is it good? i.e. no need for anything other than its proxy?

i can confirm, it is has a smart caching proxy. and you dont have to use any of the other junk (firewall, smtp, etc.) if you dont want to.

has trouble with a few sites, but on most pages so far it seems to cache things intelligently.

by the way if you are going to download torrents and you're stingy with your bandwith try find an old version of ABC, it has an option to spoof the amount it tells the tracker you uploaded, so you can pretend you uploaded a GB when really you never uploaded anything at all, the only downside is peers wont give more than 8KB each, which isn't a problem in large swarms or if you connect to a few seeds.

Alternativly you can easily modify the default bittorrent client as it is all done in python scripting language which is easy to learn. It completley goes aginst the sharing is caring thing but maybe we're not in a position to share.

I would say that people should stay away from torrents and stick to DC++, Limewire, shareaza, etc. as they generate less traffic.

they're also crap, unreliable, get everything last and the bottom of the pyramid. By the time stuff gets to the bottom it has been renamed, repackaged, stuff added/deleted, reencoded. Also torrents are the only p2p system with free configuration which means they will be able to get around 99% of the shaping tactics WBS can throw at you. And if you read the post you would see i mentioned how torrents can create no upload traffic, meanign they will create less than sharaza or bearshare or any of those things.

oh is it, then how about you go learn about exeem which is a torrent app with searching and you can search more than just file types and where bad files are kicked off the system

sry iburstuser - was too busy drinking to answer your questions.
I also only use the proxy feature (oops - and the pop3+smtp server).

Did you configure the proxy to also cache the url's with parameters in them.
i.e. Uncheck the "Do not cache CGI queries" option.

Makes a large difference cos most websites show static content dynamically. And, you can still force a refresh with <CTRL> + <F5>.

Proxy servers can also help if you are doing Anti Virus updates on more than one pc on a network. I know that the Squid Proxy in ipcop saves my NAV updates so when i do them on the next comp they are just retrieved from the local network and move VERY fast. I dont know about other programs updates tho.

This 206LanSuite looks very promising....esp if u dont have a spare box lying around and want to have all the functionality of a dedicated server by just using one of ur normal machines. I also like the easy setup of a SMTP server in windows. D/loading it now....

i agree, this app looks like it is being added to my "essentials" collection. and the fact that its free is good too -that means no need to visit the lady in red leather! :)

oh and another thing, you can use it in tandem with another proxy, such as AdSubtract I mentioned earlier. you use it as a chained proxy. works absolutely brilliantly. i wonder whether it works with zonealarm and adaware and windows update.

so the list so far:
1. adsubtract chained with 602 lan suite
2. du meter
3. gmail and email set up
4. be smart about p2p

yeah none of that will really save bandwith and the email thing just doesn't look professional, I mean its your connection so do whatever but non of that will be the difference between a month of 64k and a month of 1mbit

youre entitled to your opinion, but from my experience it will deifnitely make an impact. this is of course not easily quantifiable so its a matter of opinion. but my way is to stretch the 3gb, your way is to bust the cap and buy 9gb. i let the forumites decide :)
