Experts at the Cyber Secure Institute have calculated that the notorious Confiker worm has cost the world roughly $9.1 million as a result of its existence.
The real problem started on April 1st when hijacked computers went online and began communicating with controller domains. Microsoft offered $250 000 to anyone who could provide information leading to the capture of the virus programmer, this was because the programme was structured to exclusively attack Windows systems.
Since it started circulating in late 2008 it has managed to infect millions of computers and has inconvenienced a large number of people.
In many circles a hacker is hailed as a hero but it is difficult to regard whomever is responsible as anything other than a common criminal. Thousands of hackers and malware developers around the world are laying waste to their talents everyday in order to annoy and upset as many people as they possibly can.
How can this possibly be viewed as furthering technology for the greater good of mankind?
This picture brings to mind a lonely nerd with no friends, hell bent on taking his personal frustrations out on the world through the ingenious viruses he creates. Doesn’t he realise that if he were to plough his talents into something more constructive he may be making a great deal more money and commanding considerably more respect than he does now?
