I read in more than one thread about forumites suggesting Waze found here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.waze

So i decided to install it to see what the fuss is all about. It would seem it is more than just GPS, you can see who is around you and contact other users who also installed the app.

So this got me thinking, shouldn't one be worried about people stalking you or other security issues like hijacking, etc?

It boils down to a personal option, you can go hide yourself, block a user and so on in the app settings.

Both of those can happen with or without the app. And to pinpoint some one's location is not that easy. under correction, only you have real time location where the other you see is a general location and not real time. Or so I have seen it.

I will check it out in the next couple of months. So have you been using it for a long time or do you just know about Waze?

According to my user profile, been using for 2 years and love it. Prefer it above a traditional gps system. Even 10x better with Google buying the app and intergrating some of the feature in waze and g maps. Works great for searching locations as well.

Awesome app. Use it daily.
AutomateIt is configured to fire up waze and set destination as office as soon as I leave the 200m radius of my house, and vice versa when I leave the office. Even though I know where I am going I like the ETA, hazard warnings, traffic, etc...

It's as battery hungry as any other GPS software, I much prefer it to Google Maps and other Navigating software.
1. it is free,
2. it is updated by other users
3. if you are worried about privacy just change the settings
4. it will update your route while you are on the road as traffic conditions change.
5. you can set it to avoid toll roads, that means you can avoid all the e-tolls, but still use the highway. i have found some very interesting routes along the N3

There are some funnies, but you can go on the website and try to fix them yourself (you need to have used Waze for a while to implement your changes immediately, collected a few points in the area you live etc so that Waze can determine you are familiar with the roads there)

Can you set it to only avoid e-toll gates, but still use the toll roads ?

Last time I checked it could not do this.

Some of that data is sourced from Waze. Google bought Waze sometime back.

It does this very regularly now. I found that if I was not connected to the internet (wi-fi or 3g) it would direct me through the gate, however once i switch on my 3g and then navigate to the same destination it will direct me to avoid the gates. For example when heading south on the N3 I will go over Marlboro, get on the freeway at Long Meadow and then off again at Linksfield (to go to OR Thambo). Coming back it is off at Edenvale, drive next to the freeway until London Rd and off again at Marlboro...
