The FIFA World Cup trophy was unveiled at Khayelitsha OR Tambo Sports Complex on Friday morning.
FIFA and City of Cape Town officials were present amid tight security to kick off the trophy’s tour of South Africa.
The worldwide tour has so far covered 130 000km and 86 countries.
The cup will be at Athlone, the Waterfront, Worcester, Paarl and George as it moves through the Western Cape.
Local Organising Committee (LOC) head Danny Jordaan said the arrival of the trophy was another milestone that indicated the game was on.
At the unveiling, Coca Cola Africa President Bill Egbe said the trophy was held by 37 heads of state.
They included Liberia’s Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf who was the first woman to touch the trophy.
Only winning captains and heads of state may touch the trophy.
FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke said there was a plan to take the trophy to the moon but at 6kg it was too heavy.
