Thinkning of getting this today.

Just want to know, can you use your TV remote to control the WD live tv. For example i can control my PS3 using tv remote over HDMI

I mainly going to use it for playing from local drives and netflix streaming, should be a good fit for me

Also how "pretty" is the local files interface (includes movie metadata?) and is it laggy at all?

Can't answer your questions as I don't have one but just a heads up that takealot has it for R899 today (if you didn't already know).

Never really tried any other remote, tried iphone app which was nice but got bored and went back to the remote.
Directory structure is pretty basic not much metadata like xbmc and can be sluggish at times but you get used to it.

but it plays everything including 50gb Blu Ray copies like avatar without a hitch.

The live comes with it's own remote.

I have the WDTV Livehub and its laggy as hell. Not fun using the device at all.

Yea... http://www.takealot.com/tv-audio-vid...drive,10832354

I think it will fit my needs better than the roku

It's not a bad device at all and they spew out updates till this day.

the thing is very tiny as well, mine is connected to my Sony amp, I have a 3tb external drive connected to the WD TV, then there's a second usb port on the front for another hdd or usb drive.

The menus are very simple , it can take a couple minutes to start up from being powered on, in standby it's much quicker.
It first has to scan your hdd and 3tb takes around 5min but you can still browse and watch anything whilst it scans.

Hi, asuming you have got the WD Live SMP (Streaming Media Player) with built in Wifi, you can use any remote. Just activate the HDMI CEC under settings-->Video Audio settings.

Hope that was what you are looking for.

A friend of mine has the media player.
He says the menu is about as laggy as the Mediator and everything else out there, and that in his opinion, you'd have to spend a lot more money before getting something better.
I did order myself one as well this morning. R100 cheaper than the other places.

Ive got one of these , interface is bland (nothing like xbmc) and it can be very laggy.

Does the WD TV Live gen 3 stutter when playing large 1080p mkvs over wired lan?

Works fine for me

This is what im looking for
Thanks

I've got it up and running for some time now, no stutter when playing. I have it connected via Wifi.

Friend of mine that has one, he has 0 issues on ethernet. Obviously wifi is problematic with 1080p, although theoretically it should be fine.

Up to now I came across one file which was either buffering or stuttering through the wifi so I think it also depends on the mkv file.
