WD or Transcend Portable HDD

I received a voucher to use at Kalahari and I'm not sure which of the following 2 HDD to get:
- WD My Passport Ultra 1TB 2.5"" External Hard Drive
- Transcend StoreJet 25A3 Series - 1.0TB 2.5"

Does anyone have either of the HDDs or have some comments on them? I don't care much for the looks of the drive.

Transcend is better than WD. Have had too many cases where the latter failed with a clicking drive.

The WD drive has the USB interface connected directly to the circuit board of the drive, and I have found that this USB connector works itself loose after many connects / disconnects of the cable and the drive then becomes problematic trying to get it to mount, and because there is no SATA interface on the board, one cannot remove it from the enclosure and retrieve the data, it requires a troublesome and expensive repair should the USB connector work itself loose (and in my experience, it will come loose eventually). These newer WDs with the USB3 connectors are better than their older micro-usb interfaces, but are still flimsy.

The Transcend drives I have all are standard SATA 2.5" drives that have a USB interface in the enclosure. This is their big advantage. I cannot say if they are still like this, but the ones I have purchased last year-end, are all SATA drives, not the USB-on-circuit board interfaces of the WDs. I think the Transcends also have a 3 year warranty, and WD 2.

So, get the one with the longest warranty if they are the same price, would be my advice.

Correct.
My Transcend drive is still going. Has survived lightning and serious power surges too.

All mine (WD and Transcend) are still going strong, I have 3 year old WD externals that have nothing wrong with them... apart from wonky USB connectors that require, uhm, persuasion to connect. A couple of my Transcends have ended up being used in laptops as they were cheaper than replacement internal drives.

All much of a muchness perhaps... just the cost-cutting USB on IC replacing the SATA interface on these WDs are meh.
Warranty is my deciding factor now.

Correct, the WD is a USB-only PCB, so you could never connect it up via SATA if you wanted/needed to.

Transcend would be a regular SATA drive as stated above, and will be a Hitachi/Toshiba HDD inside most likely. Transcend has better rubber mounts inside as well.

WD 4TB Passport Ultra R1309, 3 year warranty.
Toshiba Canvio 3TB R1499, 1 year warranty.

I need to get a maximum 1TB for my sister which will be her single backup which is R700-800 spend. 2.5" I have a 1TB WD 5year old, 1TB Transcend 3 year old, 3TB Maxtor 2 year old all out of warranty.

Would you buy a 4TB WD Passport Ultra for that price and warranty as a single backup medium? Pondering if I should get it and pass one of my older 1TB drives along as a weekly driver and do a 2nd backup on this 4TB and keep for myself? I don't <gasp> need another HD, but at the price it is tempting. Very tempting.
