WD, Seagate or Hitachi? Which is the best?

What I find interesting about these "slow" seagate drives is their amazing transfer speeds.

An example.

Maximum Read Transfer Speed
=======================
7200.8 Seagate 400GB = 70.6mb/s (ATA)
WD Raptor 74GB = 70.3mb/s (SATA)
7200.8 Seagate 400GB = 68.1mb/s (SATA)
Hitachi T7K250 250GB = 66.1mb/s (SATA)

Check the Average Read/Write performance. The only drives able to edge out the Seagate's are the WD Raptors. hmmmm :rolleyes:
 
Just checked my price lists, I don't believe I never noticed that Seagate offer a 5 year warrantee.

Regards the speed, I really don't think anyone would notice such a minor speed difference. They're probably slightly slower to make them more reliable (IMO).
 
Seagate is not the fastest drives.

I think if you want fast go for the WD Raptor or something in that class.
The Raptors also have a 5 year warranty.

I have a small 40Gb Maxtor ATA133 7200RPM Drive which by far is one of my fastest drives I own.
Just do not attach a capture card and run it 24/7 like I did. I use the capture card to store my CCTV surveillance files on my hard drive.
It lasted about 6 months before it died.

I am now using a 160GB Seagate and it has been running now about 1 year solid.

Edit. A 3.2GB Quantal Fireball which I handed down is still running and it worked hard in its day.

In the 17 years I've been in computers, I've owned, sold and maintained drives from heaps of manufacturers - Seagate, WD, Miniscribe, Maxtor, Quantum, Fujitsu, Kaylok, etc.

I'n all that time, I can think of hardly any drive failures. I had a Seagate MFM 40MB that died after I used it on an RLL controller for too long at 60MB. I had a customer's Maxtor throw up SMART errors, and I replaced it without any data loss. I had a customer's Fujitsu die without warning - the well know problem they had that just about killed their drive business. My sister's Seagate 80GB that she got in her Japanese NEC PC is busy packing up - developing bad sectors.

Outnumbering all those had been the 4 and 9GB Compaq SCSI drive failures I've had on systems I support.

Other than that, none I can think of. Proportionally, I've had and sold more Quantums and Maxtors than other brands.

Raptors are very expensive though, whereas even the cheap Seagates have a 5 year warrantee. Although one could argue that it's pointless having anymore than a 3 year warranty. I know I've had RAM with a lifetime warrantee die, but I can't even remember where I bought it from and they're mostly PC133 SDRAM, so who's gonna swap it out anyway?

Sheesh, how gentle are you and your cilents with computers? I've only been in the PC game about 10 years, and I've seen probably about 30 or 40 drive crashes / controler chip failures / broken heads etc. etc., maybe more.

I've sent 7 drives in for data recovery and 4 of them were recovered at total cost of: R10 380.00

Seagates are not the fastest drives, but reliable and carry a 5 year warranty. :)

BTW.
Warrantee=Warranty.
Anymore=Any more
Gonna= going to.

But no matter..:D

normally when something breaks with a lifetime/5year warranty I can't find my bloody invoices. hehhe

Rectron are excellent in this regard. All sold items are recorded on their systems, so I've never had to show an invoice.

I'm careful with my drives, generally, and most of my clients are home users who don't really move their PCs around. I still have memories of a friend losing a Miniscribe drive when it fell over (it was on edge on the desk, fell over, died).

Currently I run a 300GB SATA Maxtor (16MB cache), with a 200GB Maxtor external drive for backups and portability. Bought pretty much on the basis of value - decent performance, nice price.

I will vouch for that.
One of the reasons I prefer to buy certain items from them.
You never have to worry about keeping Invoices.
I think any Supplier using that sort of bar code system can do pretty much the same thing.

Problem is only Dealers can take stuff back to rectron. This does not help the customer

Not a problem for me though - my customers go through me. But then, I'm just a small operation.
