I have the latest WD TV Live version, research on the net tells me it chows somewhere between 4w - 6w an hour?

trying to work out if I should just leave the thing in standby, I use it about 3 times a week only.

Only sure way to know is to test it with a power/wattmeter. 4-6w is not much and will cost around R2 per month.

Also note that some devices uses exactly the same power on standby as when it is on. Take for example the DSTV HD-PVR decoder, it uses +30W when powered on or on standby. Check it yourself with a wattmeter if you don't believe me.

I assume this thing has 3 power options.

1. Full power
2. Press power button on remote once and it goes into standby
3. Hold button down and it powers off completly

But Ja from the sounds of it it doesn't chow much.

It's likely similar to the Monochoice PVR in the sense that 'standby' entails cutting the video feed via HDMI and not much else. The WDTV is still reachable on the network in standby, but its baseline power consumption is so little that you're unlikely to benefit much from unplugging.

I would like to know from anyone knowledgeable on the subject how efficient the adaptors are that these electronic goodies generally use...

True, the one external hdd I have power adapter is always warm, another newer USB 3 external hdd power adapter stays cool.
