Hi All,

I bought a WD TV Live yesterday and tried briefly to configure it to pick up the shared external on my laptop.

Has anybody had any luck with this?

I can't seem to get it to pick up the share...

TIA!

Uhh... are you trying to go through the network to your laptop which shares the drive as samba or an ftp or something?

Its just setup as a windows share, as far as I can tell there is no need for FTP.

I have just shared the drive and on the WD TV I have gone to videos > network share > its just searches and never finds anything...

Is your laptop set to broadcast its netbios? Have you tried adding laptop's IP directly to your Live?

Your hook-up should go something like the following:

TV -> WDTV (via HDMI) -> laptop (via network) -> shared drive.

The connection is via DLNA, so run Windows Media Player to start the link.

Or plug the external drive direct into the WDTV unit.

The user forums on the WD website are an excellent source of information.

I used to have endless issues with the WDTV and SAMBA shares.

The one day it works then next day it doesn't. Works with some firmware then not with others.
Works with one PC on network then after adding second PC it can't find shares.
One of the main reasons I dumped the piece of junk

I don't know about SAMBA shares but my problems pretty much disappeared when the use of DLNA (for sharing) clicked in my somewhat dense brain (or lack thereof :) )

Now, after adding new files, I run Windows Media Player (Windows DLNA "gateway client") to re-synch - and all is well.

My understanding is that many implementations of DLNA are minimal, and are therefore suspect.

Forgive my rant about the WDTV Live / SAMBA shares issues, but if you knew how many hours I have spent troubleshooting this you would understand :(

Also, there are tons of threads over at the official WDTV Live support forums of people that have the same issues.

I can't even remember how I got mine to work 70% of the time. I just know I had to avoid having two Windows 7 PC's on the network at the same time. Win 7 plus Win 8 PC worked though :erm:

I purely use my WDTV Live Hub as a NAS device now since it has the internal 1TB drive :)

From what I have read WDTV + Linux = potentially perilous relationship :)

I have two units on my network - a Windows 7 box and a WHS 2011 box - and all is [currently] well.

OTOH, USB drives - especially thumb-drives - can be a menace, even if formatted as FAT32 <sigh>

I suggest you stick to DLNA then because from the sound of it samba is not reliable on the player. Maybe you can even go as far as utilizing a plex dlna server :)
