WDS and two routers

I have a Telkom Mega100WR router which I use to connect to ADSL and distribute to 2 laptops and 2 mobile phones in the house. It works great, but when I go upstairs I lose signal.

I have managed to get my paws on a SMC Barricade router, also has wireless. I want to use it simply to extend the range to upstairs too, and I have been poking around the settings but can't get it to work.

I am a bit confused about how I need to set up the two APs - do I need to enable WDS on both, or just on the SMC? Do I need to disable the DHCP on the SMC, and if not, does it have to be handing out the addresses in the same range as the Mega100WR? Do they have to have the same SSIDs?

Someone please point me in the right direction here.

You have to set them both to WDS if you are going that route around.
Otherwise you would run one being the mega as the AP and the second router as a client, but then you would have to plug the laptops into the client router as it loses its AP abilities in client mode.

Question tho, will the second router pick up the first one from downstairs?

you could use "repeater" mode if your SMC supports it. Works great for me.

* EDIT: set the smc to use the same ssid. you will have to play around with the dhcp settings but i would recommend that you disable it on the smc as the main ap should still distribute ip's

Pretty much the same as WDS, just minus mac addresses.
