Much to our disgrace our service are shaped! This we found out after advertising in ITWeb and on a few websites.

You may have seen our name (Cyberkinetics, CKNet Internet Services, CyberOnline) a few times on this forum, ITWeb or some other website. You may also have seen the word "unshaped" mentioned as well. Unfortunately this is not true! We resell UUNET's service and therefore our ADSL is shaped.

For your information here is our FAQ as it is at the moment:

ADSL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you offer fixed IP with this solution?
No but I can tell you that all the ADSL connections so far have mostly been continuously assigned the same IP address.

Is the service unshaped?
There is some prioritizing involved. Notably P2P networks like get a lower priority. Protocols used by business like IPSec, https, ssh, ssl, rtp are given higher priority. All other protocols have equal priority. All information we have come across suggests that the impact on P2P traffic is minimal.

What are the contention ratios?
UUNET are aiming towards a maximum of 30 to 1 ratio, at the moment it is less than that.

Do you provide usage statistics?
We can provide statistics on request, via email.

Can you have more than one simultaneous connection?
Only 1 concurrent connection is allowed. It is possible to provide additional connection on the same username and password. Any additional “connection” will be charged as an additional account. If you intend to or are using ADSL on a network, you can use a router or Windows’ connection sharing to allow all users on the network to share the ADSL connection concurrently.

What are the initial installation costs?

If you do not currently have an ADSL line from Telkom you will have to apply for one through them.
Our charge is either R729 “If you go on a month to month” R649 “If you sign a year contract” We do a double debit for the first month, this is so that you do not have to pay a cancellation fee.

Must I buy an adsl modem?

Yes you have to buy an ADSL modem; you can purchase it from Telkom

Is there extra cost for service provider ADSL?

Yes you pay Telkom an ADSL line rental fee per month then you pay us for your connection fee

Is this service available countrywide?

This service is subject to Telkom line availability. You can check if your Telkom exchange supports ADSL here http://www.telkom.co.za/portal/page...s/portal/docs/page/adsl/requirements1.jsp?g=2

Will you accounts work on HomeDSL 384 ?

Yes, currently there is no way of telling the connectiong speeds apart and cannot be charged accordingly. You will therefore pay the same amount as a 512kb connection.

If you have something that you can add to this, please let me know. It realy stinks to have my foot in my mouth!

Thanks for the honesty - is there a cap of any amount? Some services have claimed to be uncapped but in fact are limiting users to 30gb.

What is the effect, if any, to Skype users? As I'm sure you are aware Skype is P2P. Would you say that p2p shaping is similar to that on Telkom’s adsl?

Can anyone tell me what the contention ratio's are like on Telkom lines?

Thanks

Yip, thanks for the honesty Cobus. The AYCE bunch could certainly learn from this post.

Will check with UUNET on skype.

We've been with UUNET for about 3 years now, we've had nothing but excellent service from them. I will be truly shocked if they had a cap that I didn't know about. I have spoken with them a few time and everytime they confirmed there is no cap.

Cheers Nutcase. As long as skype isnt any worse than it it with Telkom I wont mind too much.

yes, thanks for the honesty.... very refreshing given recent events. A final word on whether there's a cap or not of any kind would be great.

cheers

That was an excellent information, thanks for that. At least we know what you are offering and you are not playing hide and seek.

Aye,

The honesty is refreshing!!

Also note the tone of the formites!! Appreciative and NON-flaming!!

:)

If I had the budget, I would be considering this service

WOW!

It has been said, but here it is again:

THANKS FOR THE HONESTY!

Cheers

honesty, nice yeah.

But here is my honesty, ive been on uunet since march and after the huge screwup they got much better, but I can see now yet again the international pipe they assigned for adsl is getting over used as pings arent 280ms anymore but 450-500ms with normal pings in DOS. Games like Worldofwarcraft are now worse than telkom shaped adsl. HTTP works great anything else you can see gets shaped heavily.

yeah just my 5c

Thanks for the FYI Tinuva, I would have signed up for this product if you hadn't mentioned the WoW pings are worse than on telkoms shapped service :o

HINT HINT UUNET :D

Look, if you dont play WoW and you dont do p2p, this is a great service, I would recommend it to any small business looking for a good adsl isp. For the home user the price is a little steep and for international gamers, its not what you want.

Local on the other hand seems 100% unshaped, pings are about 5ms higher than with telkom adsl on the SGS gaming servers, which is pretty damn good.

All in all, I like the service, except for my WoW ping...

Am I the only one that finds this odd???????

Say I pay on the first of the month for the services for that month, if for whatever reason I don't pay on the 1st of the second month, you simply cut off the line, and you don't loose any money. What cancellation fee are you talking about ?

Btw I'm talking about the no contract option....

What am I missing?

that sounds a little bit weird.... does it means you have to pay installation- and cancellation fees???

MSN seems to be shaped almost out of existence on cyberonline - any ideas? I never had any problems before I switched over to uunet.
