Making it device-specific just complicates it imo. Because if we limit it to phones then the dude with the blackberry is gonna b!tch about the Lumia photos etc. Leave it open and let creativity reign. I'm totally cool entering a mobile-phone photo when others are submitting Canon DS0071XmillionZOOMPIXLE photos.

Yea but it's far closer than the guy with a BB and the guy with the iPhone?
At least by limiting device you're lower and higher end optics aren't as far apart as fully open. Up to mods though - just my suggestion, especially based on the fact that every one moans in a photo competition.

Jokes aside, I also think it should be limited to a device, just phones or just cameras.

Limiting to cameras should be sub categorized though - compact, bridge or SLR. Else the guy with the R1,000.00 compact will complain about the guy with the R40,000 SLR.
If we limit device or subcategory, at least we close the gap

If we're going to limit device, I'd say only phones, otherwise leave it completely open.
That’s true!
Perhaps we can have two categories, one for phone and one for cameras and then add subcategories.
But that might make it to complicating.

I'm happy with phones only.
Gap between most is very close, as most have iPhone 4S+ or Samsung S3+ anyhow. Any editing (ie cropping, colours) must be on the phone too?

Why? I can give a friend of mine a R500,000 medium format camera with the best lenses and hundreds of thousands of Rands worth if lighting equipment and watch him take shoddy snapshots of people with the ankles cut off, incorrect exposure and white balance, skew horizon, focus on the wrong subject, motion blur and a busy, distracting background. Sounds good, but will the heavy reliance on editing not ruin the comp slightly? I mean Photoshop Express lets you do some amazing things with a screen taps. This was 30 seconds of editing on my phone with an old picture taken with my Note 3 in potato mode:
So I'm not sure if the comp should allow for editing, but then again how will one police this?
You have a good point, but this won't stop people without the gear feeling disadvantaged. This is more to kill any whining before it happens.

@ojo - have you seen the photo comps and the moaning here?
Most competitions allow for mild editing - colours, crop or something.
But as you say, policing how many is too much is subjective or what has been be done is tough. Last competition I entered a black and white zebra and was moaned at - but I took it in camera as black and white.

There will always be whining. The guy with the 8 MP iPhone 5s will complain about the guy with the 16 MP Galaxy S5, the guy with the 16 MP S5 will complain about the guy with the 20 MP Lumia 930, the guy with the 20 MP Lumia 930 will complain about the guy with the 41 MP Lumia 1020... The guy with the 18 MP Canon 700D will complain about the guy with the 22 MP Canon 5D Mark 3, the guy with the 22 MP Canon 5D Mark 3 will complain about the guy with the 24 MP Nikon D3300... Ad nauseum.
Oh, and the guy with a Canon 700D and kit 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS lens will whine about the guy with the Canon 700D and 17-55mm f/2.8 lens...

I bet a ton of people around here have similar type of phones - Samsung S3, S4, S5 and iPhones. The worst to the best is a far smaller range than fully open.
Like cars, if I limited to between 1.6 and 2.0 engines, the race will be closer. Yes - the 1.6 may complain, but the race will be closer ... as opposed to me having the 1.6 run with C63, M3 as well.
A C63 in the wrong hands is 'slow' but won't be the same as 1.6 - ever.

Yes, we know that, the "phones only" is to try and stop the whining at a manageable point. Plus it should make the competition feel more inclusive. I've got decent DSLR kit (and so does Dolby afaik) so it would be in our interest to have the competition completely open, but I for one would like to see what the community can produce with phones.
