We tested a Starlink Mini

I was starting to think starlink had shutdown, its been so many weeks since the last starlink article.
Was expecting the headline "Death of starlink in three graphs" to be the next starlink article.

Internet…well if you can make anything work on less than GPRS speeds sure go for it.
 
Come on now. Starlink is not illegal just because a corrupt government says so. We are a democracy and people already said it is not illegal. Government can't switch it off. Not even Elon can switch it off. Go ahead and get one for yourself.

they already shut down a distributor of Starlink kits, they already said Starlink is illegal, and given enough time they might go full TV license on the whole deal and prosecute people for possessing illegal equipment,

you dont know how corrupt the ANC is, they just getting started here.

sure it isn't a big deal for the Rambos at MYBB, the Biker gang or criminals who lent them this kit have resources and skills to get them out.

It’s illegal to sell/distribute but not illegal to operate.

There are many tourists/documentarians/photographers/other travellers that come across border and can make use or the kit while here as with every other satellite terminal.

In the same way cellphones sold here need ICASA labels, but tourists who come across the border can obviously still use their devices without them.

for now, you know those crazies at ICASA made Skype Illegal for the longest time to prevent telkoms monopoly being eroded.
we are so backwards that they are itching to find an excuse to make Starlink illegal to operate as well.

dont forget we live in a country that is easily 6-10 years behind the rest of Europe and America when it comes to technology and its application to daily life.

I mean sure we have EV's, but are they common? nope, sure we have Starlink, but can you buy it like you can anywhere else in the world? nope,

my point being articles like this show us 2 things, firstly were being held back in a big way, and secondly more still needs to be done to democratize high speed internet even in the most rural areas.

This relates to poverty, not technology. It’s like saying why doesn’t everyone have an S-class Mercedes.

Offering voice over IP services was illegal​


More significant than the unenforceable outlawing of Skype was the fact that only Telkom, mobile operators, and a handful of other players could legally offer voice services in South Africa.
Competition was extremely limited.
On 2 September 2004, then Minister of Communications Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri announced that this would change.
Not only would licensed value added network services (VANS) be allowed to offer voice services using whichever protocol they chose, they would also be allowed to build their own networks.
These new rules were set to kick in on 1 February 2005, and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) would finally be legal in South Africa.

my point is always , why dont we have Teslas everywhere? why dont we have what is commonplace in Europe and america?
sure poverty and location is one element, but other elements are that were simply ignored by the rest of the world,
making friends with Iran and China isnt helping our cause either.

I mean depends who you ask and who you compare it to but yes we are right up there. It is expensive though.

People also forget that while America and Australia and such seem very first world with peak internet speeds, their distribution sucks and so the average is quite low. Both still have the highest number of dial-up users anywhere for a lack of better infrastructure. It’s why Starlink exists in the first place.

It is not that expensive, you just need to do your home work. I get 600Gig from Vodacom for just over R300.
