Pietermaritzburg - A Shelley Beach-based woman was left rejected and disheartened on Thursday after she was denied the opportunity to rent a cottage because she is black.

Zanele Mzolo had responded to an advertisement placed in a local publication to acquire more information about the prospect of renting a single bedroom property available in St Michaels-On-Sea. Mzolo asked a work colleague of hers, Mirelle Archibald, to call on her behalf and inquire about the property.

Archibald was told by the property’s landlord and owner, a white woman, that she would need to speak with the person looking to rent the cottage in order to give directions to view the property at 14:00.

Mzolo returned the phone call in the hopes of confirming the appointment and was shocked by what she was told.

Shocked

“After hearing my voice she asked me if the person looking for accommodation was black,” explained Mzolo.

“I was a bit shocked at first and I didn’t know what to say, so just I just said ‘yes’.”

Mzolo claims that the woman on the phone then apologised, saying that she doesn’t rent her place out to black people because the white tenants who live on the same property wouldn’t get on with black people.

The property owner, Jenny, did not want to reveal her surname when she spoke to The Witness. “If it were up to me, I would not have a problem with it,” she said.

“We have had black people staying here before and it just doesn’t work out with the people in the cottages living right on top of each other; it causes fights.”

Jenny rents out three cottages on her property, where she lives in a house with her husband.

One of the three cottages is currently occupied by white tenants, while the other two are vacant.

'Not a racist'

“I am really not a racist, I just have to be so careful who I let in here,” said Jenny.

“I apologise if what I said was taken the wrong way.”

For Mzolo, though, an apology is small consolation for what she had to endure.

“To them, the colour of your skin still matters but not the type of person you are.

“The rejection was so hard to take; I wouldn’t wish what I felt upon anybody,” she said.

Eish, no BEE points for Jenny there...

Seriously though, she's not applying for a job and it's not public property, so even if it smells racist there's nothing to be done.

No worries, how many white members does the BMF have? :)

Maybe she just doesn't want people on her property who will slaughter animals because of their culture...

As much as I don't agree, it is however her property and she can rent it out to whoever she wants to.

Having said that, she could have been a bit more diplomatic about the way she handled it.

Boo-hoo! Cry me a river! Im indian and ive had black people tell me far worse. Dont see me running to newspapers every time someone says something to me I dont like.

How can this crap be worthy of a news article? All the white/Indian/Asian/whatever people who lose out on jobs and government tenders because they aren't black will tell this woman to get f**ked. The landlord wasn't even mean to her.
Maybe we have too many journalists in the country if they're so desperate for stories that they take on crap like this.

While in a way it is her right to rent her property to whoever she wants nobody should be discriminated against based on the colour of their skin. She is being ridiculous and in the end this does boil down to racism. Pathetic.

I tried to apply to the black gun owners association before, got told I am not African, it confused the hell out of me.

She should go next door to Kubu Bali. She can rent our place.....

Tsk, tsk

Pity you're just not dark enough to benifit from white guilt :p

Sounds familiar to me for every bloody form asking if I am white.

Shame man...what a dumb ass lady

Easy enough to include that in a rental agreement. We can all understand that. While you have a right to practice your religion you don't have a right to practice your religion on someone else's property if they don't want you to.
