Weak wifi signal (shared between two houses)

Hey guys. My wife's brother stays in a flatlet on his parents' property.

They've got a 3g router which they all share. Problem is in the flatlet the signal is very weak and I think its because they were cheapskates when they bought the router!

I've got an old ADSL router (with wifi) at home, is there any way I can connect this to the 3g router (which has only one LAN port) so he can get a better signal?

You could try making the old router go into bridge mode and extend the connection. Most modern ones have this future but you would need to research this more to find out if your router does.

Your best bet is to get 2 wireless outdoor access points like these and setup a point-to-point connection between the house and the flatlet. Very easy to do and works great. I've 2 of these babies working sharing an network connection between my house and a friend of mine who lives 500m down the road. But they'll work up to 30km away if the conditions are right.

First do a scan with the WiFi router to see what other freq's is being used in your area.
You might find you sharing it with somebody else, so select another freq.
You can play around to see what gives the best speed.

Can also try to switch off N mode if it is a newer type router.
Will be slightly slower but much stronger.

Hi There,
Cable connectivity would still give better speed but I appreciate that that may not be possible given the distance.
The wireless outdoor points would then be the best option. Trying to get the 2 routers to talk wirelessly would work but I would not advise it. Some security issues around it and speed will always be at the slowest one.

Get a netgear WN2000RPT extender and plug it in his flatlet and it boost the signal strength . I use that in my house because where my modem is and TV room is quite far and the signal is weak and I use the netgear in the TV room to boost the signal. It's amazing I paid R450 at incredible connection on special

This. I've had a signal from an old 802.11 b wifi go through 3 walls and 30 meters of garden with a pringles bottle and some tin foil - and still managed more than 3 MB/s (24 576 kbps).

2.4 GHz is still the best at going through walls and stuff.
The newer 5.8 GHz does have the speed, but not the penetration power of 2.4

A point to point link would be the correct and best way to do this but it more expensive.

You may even be able to setup a directional CPE like a LocoStationM2 on the flatlet to receive the 3G routers Wifi. If this does not work you could purchase another LocoStationM2 to create the point to point link.

Use 2.4Ghz as it offers better penetration characteristics
