Web Africa vs Mweb/Afrihost - Youtube

I have a 2Mbps Telkom line with a 1Mbps premium uncapped account from Mweb. Using Mweb, I can easily stream 360p and often 480p, with Resource Monitor showing my browser sitting at between 100KB/s and 110KB/s. When I switch to Web Africa, even though Speed Test shows I get around 1.89Mbps and downloads run at around 180 to 190KB/s, Youtube is unusable even at 360p with it stopping to buffer every couple of seconds. Resource Monitor shows download speeds of between 30KB/s and 50KB/s. I also have an Afrihost account which gives around the same speed in Speed Test, but Youtube streams perfectly at 480p and buffers once in a while at 720p. Why am I getting poor Youtube performance with Web Africa? Both the Web Africa and Afrihost accounts are capped.

I've been on Web Africa for months now and never had an issue with YouTube.

Judging by that youtube is getting shaped on the webafrica account.
 
Yup, had the same experiences with WebAfrica on YouTube ...since switching to Afrihost almost a year ago, don't think I've had streaming issues once. From what I've gathered over the years through some rather anecdotal evidence is that WebAfrica ain't so hot in the Cape Town areas, and Afrihost is great. And perhaps the opposite is true for Gauteng.
 
Same problem, 2mb home and business uncapp WA and capped TI.

Mweb and AH all OK.
 
I have the same issue - George - 10Mbps line:
WA:
Movie starts playing and then stops...
Downloads run at full speeds and suddenly stops - need to stop and resume download
Facebook and Google+ - pages frequently loads without pictures showing, pages doesn't load fully.
Google+ - frequently shows this action cannot be completed, loosing Hangouts connection.

Small niggles that's now starting to irritate me to no end.

No issues on my Afrihost account.

You on uncapped or capped?

How many stars?
 
Its because of this I recently moved to Afrihost...its a bit more per month but no more star rating or throttling issues... BTW, is the WA capped account?
 
I am at present unhappy with WebAfrica. I have used +-24GB's in the last 12 days and I am on a 2 star rating, I mean seriously WTF! I am using the 2mbps uncapped home account.

Also, I must add that +-10GB's have been used during the so called 12AM - 6AM unmetered bandwidth time.

I've had no issues with any type of streaming on Web Africa - home capped. It's been one of the best accounts I've used. I wouldn't touch home uncapped as I don't like the star rating at all on those accounts.

Thanks for the feedback. I am changing my account to home capped from next month. The 60GB + 60GB looks quite an attractive option.

Streaming youtube with my home uncapped 2mbps account is impossible, even using the crappy 144p option.
 
Hi Guys,

I will need to take this up with our Network team but will need the following via a PM from all those who are having the streaming issue:

  • ADSL username;
  • Speedtest results; and
  • Trace route results to the sites you streaming from.

I will get our team to investigate and provide feedback.
