Hi

I used to be a student at a flight school, but have since finished the course. Jobs for new pilots are scarce at the moment, and so I decided to teach myself basic web design and development in order to bring in some money while I look for a proper pilot job, as well as have something to fall back on in case.

I've been approached by the flight school I trained at (www.algoafc.co.za) to manage this website for them. They asked me how much I would charge to maintain the website and add new features to it as time went on. At first they want me just to add a few static pages for new aircraft they have, but further down the line they'd like to add PHP features such as an on-site mailer, a student portal etc.

As I'm currently quite new to this field, I'm not really sure what the going rate it at the moment and was wondering if anyone could help me in this regard. How much is a reasonable price to charge to maintain a website. Would it be better to charge per hour that I'd spend on it instead and how much per hour would a fair rate be?

Any other advice is welcome.

Kind Regards

Price is determined by your knowledge

How knowledgeable are you in web development and what coding languages do your work in ?

Like byron_spy said. Your hourly rate is determined by what you know. The more you know the more you can charge. If you're just starting out and only know basic html and css I would say R50-R100 an hour.

I made that site that I posted there. So yes I'm still just starting out. I've also taught myself some PHP and Javascript since then. So what I'm basically asking is what would a starting asking price be.

Looking at the website at the URL you posted I would think this type of site would be best suited for a CMS application like Wordpress/Drupal/Joomla etc.

I have only named 3 of the popular ones but I am sure there are many others that are just as good.

Your design for the site would then be a template and adding new pages or modding existing pages would be quite easy.

I would suggest you learn one of the CMS applications you feel most comfortable with (try the demos on the CMS sites), practice skinning it and then decide what/how you are going to charge for the maintenance thereof.

In the meantime, on the existing site, check your spelling and grammar; especially "there" instead of "their" and vice versa. There is nothing like poor spelling & grammar to ruin a website.
