Actually CTU advises there Web Development students to develop a portfolio from very early on in there training. Working from a gmail account is poor though. Got to know how to setup a email server if you want to do your own freelance work.

A front end dev doesn't need to do SYSADMIN work...

But I agree that you should at least get your own domain.

Setting up an email on a shared hosting package should he basic stuff.

This doesn't really fall into backend to be honest if you get someone to build you a website you atleast expect them to know how to set up a normal info@yourdomain.com E-mail address plus a forwarder to you lr Gmail for you know that odd issue and be able to host your site on a shared hosting platform.

I assume your company is aware of this and okay with it? I only ask because many IT companies have a "moonlighting" clause in their contract that requires you to clear it first. It may seem really unfair but consider it from the point of view of the company - how do you control that someone doesn't do "work on the side" for a client?

If you cannot setup a email server then I highly doubt whether you are a capable web developer.

It is like taking health advice from a morbidly obese doctor. Does not instill confidence in your abilities.

Got to know how to setup a email server if you want to do your own freelance work.

If you are meaning that someone should be running their own Postfix/sendmail/etc email server then that IS THE WORST ADVICE EVER.
Unless you're Snowden or have some extremely sekret sekrets that you want to keep sekret then there is nothing wrong with using whatever email address you want.

There is no need for a vanity email address.

If on the other hand you are referring to paying Afrihost R9 a month for a domain + email then again - you don't need a vanity email.
It may help to have a portfolio somewhere and even for that you can use github or something similar.

TLDR: Running your own email server is *****ING MENTAL. DO NOT DO.

No there is plenty wrong with a business using Gmail.

If you are a web development business and your employees use gmail then the business does not own the email addresses. Whoever setup the gmail account does (Usually the employee.) That means that all those business cards printed with the business email address than the employee owns. All the time the business website advertised the employees email addresses.

What happens when that employee quits to start up his own web development business? Now he no longer works for you but all your hard earned clients still email him. He can very easily now email your clients back and tell them you know what I don't work for that company but let me tell you how I'm willing to do the work for half the price. Stealing contracts and clients very easily.

I know the OP mentions working for himself but if he gets a good thing going and he wants to expand he could very easily fall into this trap.

What you can say about it being difficult may very well be true. I have never personally had to do the email servers but all the places I have been at just always had them and it was assumed even if never said that no business should ever be without it.

If you are self employed then you are the business so the concept still stands.

No.

You message me with a Gmail or some other free disposable email amd you go straight to spam I won't even read the subject.

Business even more so.

Exactly the same thing can happen no matter what email address you're using.

What we had for our last company was a single shared gmail account under our companyname@gmail.com.
This way anyone could pick up on any email and help the client out. Someone sick today and unable to get out of bed? No problem - anyone else can pickup on the thread and help out.

If your employees are going to be stealing customers from you and your customers are going to move to them then they're probably not the people you want to be doing business with anyway!

You do not want to be running your own email server, getting it unblacklisted becasue someone else had the some IP address at some stage is a real pain in the ass. Not having email being delivered because you didn't setup your SPF (SPR SPsomething) record correctly and the receiving mail server ignores your mail is worse that using a gmail account.

I don't think that is what you are recommending though. I think you're also saying to go for a 'hosting + email' package from a renown provider with dedicated people to handle the above problems and keep your mail delivered.

Ps. Check out zoho.com for free email with your own domain name. Also check outhttps://letsencrypt.org/ for free SSL certificates.

yeah - I was being a bit of an ass yesterday, sorry.
I did, however, freelance using a private@gmail.com address for about 2 years with no downsides or strange looks from clients.

My comment on running your own email server Does still stand though - don't put yourself through the pain.

I would tend agree with this. Also their webmail interface is far superior to squirrelmail, roundcube or horde that comes with all the cpanel installs.
