Hi all.

In an attempt to get something off the ground, I need to build a simple (for now) website.

What options are there in terms of web development lately (haven't done web development in a while, but can help myself with html and php).

I am looking for a toolkit (and platform for that matter), where I can build the site, see what it looks like and work, and then ftp to my hosted site.

Any help appreciated.

I'd suggest wordpress

+1 if you're doing a simple website. You could also look at Drupal or Joomla as alternatives and pick what you're most comfortable with. Wordpress is the easiest though.

After posting, I read a thread about wordpress vs joomla. Question though: isn't wordpress an online solution where you build the site directly on their hosting servers? I have my own hosted solution, hence the need for an offline tool. And risking being shot, something like the good old Frontpage ;)

WordPress.com is a hosted solution, however nothing stops you from hosting your own. It is easily installable on most hosts.

You can host Wordpress on your own server.

Another alternative would be to get an HTML template, a premium template (which doesn't cost more than R150 really) and get that going. So design is done and looking great, and you just editing your content.

If you have the host, I would also recommend Wordpress and then also use a premium theme on it. Wordpress wil take care of a lot of things you not thinking about now like how would it work on a mobile phone and other functionality.

you get the "self hosted" version of wordpress from wordpress.org
wordpress.com is the wordpress hosted version

Well, since you are used to a WYSIWIG HTML editor like F****page (:D), have a look at the free Microsoft tools on this page. Expression Web will be suitable for designing your site and Expression Design for the graphics. Visual Studio Express is great if you need to work directly with your HTML and JavaScript.

Wordpress is pretty cool. It's really just an organised set of php functions.

Alternatively, if you have a win server Visual Studio Web Express is totally free.

+1 for Wordpress. For something quick and dirty google for free html templates and use Notepad++ (not WYSIWYG) to customize it. Notepad++ also have a handy FTP plugin.

Why the Win server? Only needed if you are using ASP.NET. I use VS to code HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP and only use Linux hosting with MySQL.

Lol. Not used to Frontpage at all, just know it used to exist, and seeing that I will be doing this on the side for my own venture, I won't have a lot if time to manually edit code in pages, hence a "package" type solution that I am looking for.

If you want to do a basic website in a jiffy, try Hetzner's SiteBuilder which comes with a hosting package. Everything is done on-line, so no need to FTP to a site, except if you already have a host or dedicated server.

Already have a host, and the idea is to do it offline (sideline stuff :)) and then upload to the site
