Japanese Giants Launch Web Over Powerline System

Three Japanese consumer electronics giants have created a new technology to transport Internet and media signals around the home via the electricity network, Panasonic said on Thursday. Sony (6758.T), Mitsubishi (6503.T) and Matsu****a-owned (6752.T) Panasonic have set up the SECA powerline alliance.

They have developed a system to transfer 170 Megabits per second of data through the power lines of a home, Panasonic researcher Ingo Chmielewski told journalists at the electronics trade fair CeBIT. He said the technology is already available and introduction depended on government authorization.

The speed is three times faster than wireless technology Wi-Fi and is fast enough for high definition television signals. Unlike wireless alternatives, the powerline technology performance is stable throughout the home. SECA will compete with existing technology from the HomePlug alliance of 50 companies, including Japanese group Sharp (6753.T). The two systems are not compatible.

HomePlug's current standard is only 14 Mbps but it is thought to be working on a faster version. Sony is also a member of HomePlug, according to the consortium's Web Site and it was unclear if it would be part of both. Sony was not available to comment. Asked why the three companies came up with their own technology and risked yet another format war in the consumer electronics world, Chmielewski said: "We think our technology is better."

why hasn't HomePlug taken off ?

I ask because i was looking for one of those devices recently and the cheapest was closer to R1 000 and I needed a pair. My conclusion was that there isn't a lot of these devices on the market hence the high price.

I was looking for sub R 500 price levels.

Wireless is all good but with the router in the study room the signal is attenuated by the time it reaches the the living room. So i thought of the HomePlug device to bring the lan to the living room and then plug in a wireless access point then viola; internet everywhere.

This is practical right ?

The technology has not taken of in SA because when the signal hits a switch board , dp or anything like that it dies.

Remeber the power in SA is quite dirty.

However, Eskom has been using this technology for a while.

I dont understand what you are saying please explain;

what do u mean dirty ?
are u talking about the distribution board in every house ?

please explain ?

I was considering it a month ago, then I had a bit of a rethink due to the risk of lightning strikes - I don't have enough UPSz to put in all the rooms I want LAN'd & none of the UPSz I have cater for an RJ45 In & Out...

Thanks for raising that. After your post I did a search on "HomePlug Lightning" and I see that they are starting to make devices with lightning protection built in. So at least i know now to look for a device with lightning protection.

I don't really trust these lightning protection things - I do however trust my UPSz though :).
