Hi all

I'm looking towards gaining an extra skill of some sorts that I'd be able to do in my free time (I'm not in the IT industry).

Unisa offers this short course in web page design http://cs-cert.unisa.ac.za/index2.h...troduction+to+Internet+and+Web+Design+(70076)

It sounds very basic. I want to know if I'd be able to design a website with this if say a friend with a small business had to ask me for help.
Would I need additional courses?

I apologise for the noob approach

It definitely looks like a well-rounded course for building such a site. Looks like it covers the basics, and maybe even then some (they talk about using jQuery to enhance the site, but there's no detail there - it could cover things like animation, using plugins, etc).

I'd also recommend doing some self-training use the many, many free tutorials available on the web. In fact, I'd probably do this first. I never went to varsity, and never took these courses, but am proficient. Granted, I'm in the industry, but I believe that anyone can learn using the various free resources found on the net today. Screencasts are also a good way to learn.

// Lol, did I just see "CDROM"? Have I gone back in time? What year is it?

It looks quite decent however there are so many online ones that are very good I would just do a few of them. Here are a few to get started:

http://www.codecademy.com/en/tracks/web
https://www.coursera.org/course/webapplications
http://www.w3schools.com/website/default.asp

And a great beginners book or two is also worth their weight in gold.
The big thing about programming is that there are nearly as many ways of getting the job done as there are programmers so pick a path and stick to it for the intro phase and then start leaning about alternatives. This is an ever changing environment so you will always be learning.
