Hi
I am an IT student looking to buy a web server which I will use to host my own website and probably many other sites as a small business. What features and functions should I look for when buying a webserver that will reliably host about 100 websites? Oh and is it possible to rent a server on the cloud, if so, where should I look ?

On a budget and not serious as in practice stuff.

Go with afrihost they are cheap and unreliable.

If you want top notch quality and support then domains.co.za

If you want to explore VPSs then of course domains.co.za as well however if you are on a budget then you can also look into OVH

In fact there was another formatee here that also has his own cheap Web hosting that you can look into

I'd imagine two of the most critical will be watchdog and OOB remote connections.

Edit - After reading Thor's post I think I misunderstood your question. Do you want to buy the hardware or rent a solution from a service provider? I answered based on the former.

do you prefer windows or linux servers..? are you going to host asp or php or html sites or a mixture of these..? are you happy with the higher latency to international hosts or do you want to host locally..?

im biased toward linux.. when shopping for a server, make sure you have adequate disk space.. think future growth and the same goes for ram and cpu.. depending on webserver software and your preferred php handler, you will want enough cpu and ram to reliably run the 100 sites and cover potential bandwidth usage.. the amount of cpu and ram needed, is greatly influenced by the expected number of connections to the site.. if you want uptime, stay away from afrihost.. just about any other provider in sa should be okay and choice will likely come down to bang for buck in the specs department..

Start with something like this and one of these, fairly simple to setup but I will even help you. Then when you make money you get 2 of these and replicate the CPANEL virtual machines between them, at that stage you would also want some of this.

As a noob though get your head wrapped around this first

Thansk for that tutorial link. Pretty damn decent watch.

There's some really good stuff out there: NDC host (which resells licenses @ the same price as everyone else) will handle setup for you at no charge and also provide ongoing technical support which is a steal as they charge the same $14 as everyone else.

Then there's BOB cares: they do a pretty decent job at managing your servers and will even manage your WHMCS helpdesk on your behalf...

@nuclear7

I think it's fantastic that you as a student are wanting to start a business, hosting or other; SA needs more people with entrepreneurial spirit.

As for what you are wanting to do, Ipwn 4 gave some very useful links to go through -- my suggestion, don't spend any money on hardware just yet, find a hosting reseller with a solution that suits your needs and start there. (Let somebody else worry about the hardware / infrastructure while you getting going).

Once you get near your 100 websites then revisit shopping for hardware.
