Hi,

We are currently looking for spec on building a new web server and I was wondering what would be ideal for the below requirements:

  • On average 1000 users per day
  • Probably serving 50,000 pages per day
  • SQL 2000 will be running on the same machine
  • Windows 2003 Enterprise
  • This machine will not be used as a development server
  • Web App is written in normal ASP
  • Web server will be hosted @ IS - Rosebank Data Centre

It's never a good idea to run SQL server on the same box as IIS as SQL generally likes to eat up all the memory available but if you have to then 4GB memory minimum with 2GB assigned to SQL and the balance to IIS and the O/S.

Minimum hardware:

Dual Xeon CPUs or Quad Core Xeon
2x Scsi Disks in Mirrored/Raid 1 config (never run Raid 5 for the logs on a RAID 5 config)
4GB Ram
Dual NICs teamed for redundancy

The above may be a little overkill but allows for a bit of growth.

Depending on budget I'd recommend a raid 5 config for O/S, Websites, SQL Data, Program files and a separate Raid 1 config for the SQL log files. (SQL is pretty disk intensive if you're running in full recovery mode or have alot of database transactions).

Thanks this helps allot.

The current spec that one of the IT companies gave us is as follows:

2x 2.00Ghz Duo Core CPU's
8gb RAM (Upgradable 2 64gb)
2x Seagate 220gig SATA HDD in Raid

Box include dual power supply & Dual 1000gb onboard network

According to your spec the above machine should last us some time (I assume)

Jurre that's a high spec for serving a small number of users.

2 of these will be more than enough, 1 for SQL and 1 for web server. Maybe put 4GB Ram in SQL server

2 x Xeon 2.6 GHZ with HT 4MB cache
2 GB Ram
2 x 73GB Drives (RAID1)
2 x 146GB Drives (RAID1)
