Web TV project by Standard Bank

Standard Bank is set to launch a web TV project, flighting entertainment and educational content to promote their products among a younger audience

Thats brilliant. Now all thats left is to provide this "younger audience" with an uncapped pipe capable of actually streaming "flighting entertainment and educational content" for less than the current ~R1000 / month. Sheez.

I was in Korea a month ago and told my hosts I paid USD 120 for a 4 meg pipe. The short plump guy choked on his dumpling and a heimlich later saw it fly across the room.

Sorry Standard Bank, you just made a huge mistake. If you wanted to throw away R2M (which is a laughably tiny amount of money for a bank anyways), why not just give a home loan to a compulsive gambler instead?

I used to be a student, and I promise you very few of them can even afford to put petrol in their cars, let alone the insane, colossal, outrageously ludicrous cost of a proper (none of this silly "cap" nonsense) internet connection in SA. The ones who can afford such things wouldn't be interested in Student Achiever accounts anyway, they'd want Private Bankers. Come to think of it, they probably wouldn't be studying either. Daddy would buy them a business and set them up for life.

I am going to be hopeful here :)

Well done SB.

Zero rated Data accounts when using the Web Portal from SB...

as long as it works on an ipad.
then it'll be sure to capture the student market for sure.

This web tv project is also backed up by a tv show, so they will still be targeting the the student market even if people dont have internet.

As for the guy who suggested that the people who do have uncapped internet are looking for private bankers - do you even know how much you need to have a private bank account?

Seems like steps in the right direction from Standard Bank. In South Africa, switching banks is not very common, so by capturing the student market, a bank can ensure it has a healthy pipeline for other products as that person matures e.g. vehicle finance, home loans, investment accounts etc.

Their website only says it costs R285 per month, but I remember something like having to earn R25 or 35k a month. If you don't earn at least that, how the hell can you afford to spend R1033 per month on an ADSL connection? Although it would likely have to be a 10Mbit if you want to watch TV reliably, thus almost R2500.

I see Absa requires a gross annual salary of R750 000. So R 62 500 per month gross. So, like 40 nett? You'd probably need that to really consider a 10 mbit line. So not as much of an exaggeration as you thought, hey?
