WebAfrica - 3'rd rate service?

Dude, if you had ever worked for a bank, you would know that it is no laughing matter. Take the time to make contact with the banking council and ask them how the banks share info on stuff like that. Also take the time to speak to people at CGI, ITC, Experian etc. Unpaid items is no laughing matter.

Also ask anyone who works for a bank how serious unpaids by the staff is looked at. Like I said before, working at a bank we are supposed to have a perfect credit rating. How can I decline your loan because of a bad credit record and unpaids if I have them myself? Did you know that you wont get work at any financial institution with a bad credit history?

So yeah, tell me again Im the bad guy. In retrospect I should have known that I would have turned into the bad guy in some way.

And The MD should come out smelling like roses, because he did what noone else did, and thats respond. Kudos for that

Sure WA made the mistake, but :
All I'm advising you to do is to just keep SOME money in that account, just for incase... That would be identifying the potential risk of your daughter never getting into the right school etc, and covering it from your side!

I don't know how many debit-orders are coming off that specific account every month , but if it's more than one (which I strongly believe it is), all the more reason to hedge your position by leaving say, R500 in the account.
Especially if you WORK in the bank and can easily check what debit-orders etc have gone off your account every 30 mins....(In order to identify fraudulent debit-orders coming off your account - which I think might be a reason you don't have any money in that account?)

I don't see how this has got anything to do with being South-African, I would think that an error like this may occur in any company... WA was never and will never be liable for your working in a bank (and therefore maybe getting the warning you speak of).

I see this is becoming a battle of comparisons, so here goes:
It's like ALWAYS driving on the left hand side of the road, NEVER looking into the oncoming lane to see if there's someone that's lost control, and then also not swerving out of the way when someone hits you, because you're in the correct lane... - just because you're actions was correct doesn't mean the "other party's" actions will also be 100% up to scratch, we need to consider that in every aspect in life... Banking, driving etc...

But I do feel for you, working in a bank etc.. (I, myself will work for a financial institution, in a year...:D)

What ADSL newbie said

I'm not saying Webafrica wasn't at fault, cause they were, I'm just saying keep a small amount in there for situations like this. I know you shouldn't have to, but this kind of thing happens everywhere in the world and at least by keeping a small amount in there you are covered by any mistakes.

We are all human and are bound to make mistakes. Perfection does not exist although some are trying much harder than others.

dakeyras, you are working at a bank and know the risks about timely and untimely debit orders and the mistakes that happen on a daily basis. Why did you take the risk of trying to move the deduction date as appose to just making sure that you transferred the correct amount? Surely that would have been easier and would have kept ownership of the potential mistake somebody else can make? Have you used the bandwidth up to that stage, by that I mean Web Africa trusted that you would pay in arrears? Do you think any other company would have been more accommodating? It’s like walking across the street when the light is green for you and a 10ton truck is coming at 100kph against the red light – yeah sure you are right, DEAD-right. This means I agree that theoretically you are correct, but never transfer accountability for your own actions – learn out of them.

Sure Web Africa slipped by giving the impression that they would be spending the extra effort and time to deal with the exception of changing your debit at the last moment. Being too flexible now makes them look bad. Yes, I had my differences with them as well in the past, but they are always dealing with human issues positively and for that I take my hat off.

There is more than 1 lesson in this: 1. Take some responsibility for your own actions. 2. Labour costs money and Web Africa creates work by being very accommodating – trying to be very client centric. Going the extra mile is flawed with risk/reward.

trust me if you work in the bank and have unpaid debits on your account its like getting a disiplinary hearing and you end up in sh*&^t
we sign clauses that can lead to dismissal, i am in the financial advisory services an we get monitored not only by the bank but also by the FSB and FPI so yes unpaid debits, judgements, adverse judgements, late payments etc is like the worst and could mean dismissal for me.

It's like buying a car that claims to get 20km/l and filling up exactly 75l to drive from JHB to CT, and then blaming the car sales team for running out of petrol!

This may be an extreme example, but its almost like blaming a women for dressing too sexy when she gets raped.

I see this is becoming a battle of comparisons, so here goes:
It's like ALWAYS driving on the left hand side of the road, NEVER looking into the oncoming lane to see if there's someone that's lost control, and then also not swerving out of the way when someone hits you, because you're in the correct lane...

Hehe....:D :D :D :D

so knowing all this, think every bank staff should leave in sufficient funds in their accounts to prevent these consequences from happening...if they're so serious...
Cant always be relying on others, hoping they wont make a mistake..

I learnt a lesson from this :P

Web Africa's reply to them deducting monies after it was paid to them

"It seems that unfortunately you were effected by the technical difficulties in our payment reflections that we experienced. In saying this, the debit order still going through, is definitely due to the error we experienced on our side, we had trouble with payments between 19 Feb and 6 March reflecting on our client accounts, thus the payment that you made, only reflected on your account after we had already put through our debit order batch. We would like to offer you our most sincerest apologies in this regard, and would like to add that this should not again happen in future."

Enjoy the day ahead

Human error is something that's bound to occur, but I think keeping money in your account on the probablilty that someone else is gonna mess up, after they gave you confirmation that they WOULD NOT is a bit of a stretch.

I too work for the bank, well for the next week and then I'm out. Yes we have the advantage of keeping track of our accounts instantly, but thats no reason for our complainant here to make sure he has money in his account for be it; ignorance or human error.

I know that I'm accustomed to handling my account in a certain manner. All my debits go off on the 21st of each month. So I'm used to it and I know that the businesses debiting me have been doing so in a timeous fashion, then hopefully all I could expect is the same from another business - especially after having recieved confirmation from them.

Reasons why our buddy here does not have money in his account are his and us having to ask, Why he had none, in my opinion is not the turning point of the scenario. He had money in another account - which he did mention he would have transferred to cover the debit, but was confident in the response given to him by WA staff that it would not be neccesary. So why should the money be there if he does not want it to be?
They could rather have told him that the likelyhood of the debit still going through was probable and should have informed him of this - cos as the MD of WebAfrica noted - batches and the lot have been a constant thorn in their side. The WA staff member should not have taken responsibility and given the client the satisfaction that his query was taken care of, when clearly stated by the MD, there might be problems arising due to said thorn.

I've had a uncomfortable situation just now in the last 2 days concerning debits. When it came to payday - the 20th - guess what - no pay! My HR people neglected to inform me that I'm only getting paid on the 31st when I officially depart. So I see these damn debits going off via SMS and putting my account into a negative balance yesterday. Get to work this morning and call up my credit officer, whom luckily hasn't unpaid any of them cos she saw that my money would only be in Saturday and so its sorted. Thing is - if these debits were unpaid, who would be responsible? Me or the HR department? I've got money that I keep on my c/card, but its there for a reason gaining interest. I'm not gonna put money on my other account and have it doing nothing for me, just for the notion that a debit is going to be unpaid through no fault of my own. It's not my responsibilty to make sure that another firms business practices are in order - thats their internal struggles which they have to put in order.

So in conclusion. I support the complainant here and salute the MD of WA for coming to the fore and being open and honest about the situation.

Its good to know that WA takes such an interest in their clientele. Also because I soon will be hooking them up in the weeks to come as my ISP!
*sigh* As soon as Telsckum come and install my darn DSL! :( :)
