I understand that Telkom Internet accounts now provide a portion local only access (10 gig?). Why is it then that this is not offered on the WA shaped SAIX accounts?

Because Telkom are being anti-competitive and selling thier accounts below cost (or at least what is considered cost by the other ISPs selling SAIX bandwidth). 1GB plus 10GB local on SAIX would probably cost an ISP at least R40 + 10 x R6 = R100 but Telkom sells it for R79. (I thumb-sucked the figures R40 and R6 but I'm sure they aren't too far off)

Then look at the 3GB plus 20GB local would cost an ISP say 3 x R40 + 20 x R6 = R240 and it is sold for R149.

If you assume international is worth 5 times as much as local (not too far off I don't think, you can get international for ~R50 a GB and local for R10 a GB) then Telkom are effectively charging us R21.29 per GB international and R4.26 per GB local (give or take a rounding error or two) on the 3GB + 20GB local. No other ISP can compete with that on SAIX bandwidth without making a loss

ISP's that resell SAIX bandwidth pay per gig, no matter what. Telkom then competes directly with them with their "separate" ISP (telkom internet) and then offers a way better package than these ISP's can.

Web Africa now has it's own network, meaning they can supply bandwidth like SAIX or IS which means that we might see similar (if not better) packages offered by them. Their hands won't be tied by IS or SAIX anymore so I'm expecting some nice packages available at very affordable prices.

This will then make 4 bandwidth providers (AFAIK) in South Africa. SAIX/IS/MTN Business and Web Africa

So basicly its a win win situation for Telkom/SAIX

Do we know for certain that these other 1GB accounts don't have any extra local bandwidth? eg. ISPs reselling 1GB+10GB(local) as 1GB prepaid international. They would then score on local saved?

p1sses me off that Telkom can have a better offering in the market though. Looking 4wd to WA's own products which I sincerely hope will beat those by SAIX/Telkom
