I just got a prepaid WEBAFRICA account - one of the options is to enable DSLSecure. Can anyone explain to me what this is and how it works.

They have a great web interface for viewing your internet usage and the signup was a dream...

(might even dump SAIX)

Far as i understand it locks you account to one NAS port (being your router). Which means that only your router can connect with that account and no one else.

Once its locked you will have to use that specific router to change and manager the account under your services.

I'm not sure exactly what DSL Secure does but it could one of two things :

1) It locks the ADSL Account, so that it can only be used on a specifc ADSL line. Hence rendering the account useless to anyone that steals it and trys to use it on their lines.
It has nothing to do with the router.

or 2) Stops incoming traffic to your ADSL connection on ports 23, 22, 80, 443 hence protecting your ADSL modem from being attacked, and people trying to steal your connection details, or reset your modem

Basically it's a good thing to activate, as they ensure that your ADSL account is locked to only your ADSL line, and or that your ADSL modem can not be hacked remotely.

DSL secure locks your PPOE account to your NAS Port ID, which is the unique serial number given to the DSLAM that your line is plugged into at the exchange. It is the most secure way of having an account.

So what happens if telkom replace the DSLAm at the exchange - will my account not work?

You get capped - even if the NAS Port ID stays the same and the IP address changes after a Telkom reconfiguration you end up getting locked out - quick call to Webafrica and they remove DSLSecure which you can activate again after login.

No, and I speak from experience because Telkom replced mine and my internet stopped working. Had to contact WA and get them to disable DSLSecure so I could connect again.

Understandable, but just in case it happens to you, you should know.

Ditto.

As a Web Africa Employee i would just to confirm, you all have it right :)

The easiest way to explain it in very basic terms is that you give certain lines permission to connect to your account.

This eliminates the threat of hackers getting your account details and capping you.

As said above if the Dslam is changed the DSL secure will need to be reset.
A quick call or ticket and we will do it for you :)
