Ok, wife moved office, so could no longer use her wifi - brick walls, and no transmitter.

Decided to try and re-activate a line, that sorta worked 2 yrs ago. with Mweb.

I say sorta, cos, it was terribly slow, and the way it was set-up caused conflicts with other wireless settings,
so, eventually, just gave it up, and went to a cell-c dongle.

The cell-c dongle is fine, but, its v expensive.

So, began the process, to try and get line re-started.

Telkom was the the first call, last Thursday. They said the line was fine. Sorted out a netgear router, and the adsl link light, was always on amber - indicating, a poor line.

Got hold of Mweb, to see if they could see data going thru the line. As we had 2 accounts their, they were not able to do so .. it may have been a problem with the line, or their systems, but, in the end, I decided to just ditch everything, and try Webafrica. (This was partly, cos the 'on-line ADSL signup from Telkom, seems to involve printing out a form from the website, and taking it to an office).

Sent in the order last friday, for an uncapped ADSL line 10mpbs-R300/mth, and Business ADSL uncapped 4mbit, at R1999/mth.

The website is v friendly, and sends u back login details to the client area. These details didnt work till Monday, but, I did order etc, on Fri Nite.

On Tuesday, I noticed in the client area, a client confirmation was required, so I Called them.

V happy with the call response time, and, he / we sorta decided the line was faulty, and we should call Telkom.

I logged a call with them, Tuesday, and a guy came today. After 3 hrs, of toing and froing, we established multiple problems, but finally got the thing to work.

V happy with the Telkom guy (Isaac), and with helpers at the Webafrica end, confirming intermittent probs.

I am now up, for an hr or so, at 1.3mps download

Overall experience was v positive .. speed not the greatest, but, can live with it.

You cant go wrong with WA they have the best after sales support too.
I have never waited londer than 1 min and they are always friendly and know what they are talking about.

Hmm donno if it might help but the orange light does not display a poor line but it displays that the ADSL line is not syncing with the exchange. That will be telkom you contact for that and not related to the ISP.

Sorry, typo .. went for the R1999 package.

Happy enuf with the speeds for the first week, but .. yesterday, it dropped off a cliff, and hasnt really got much better today.

Download speed 0.26 MBPs

Will maybe give the help desk a call later.

No reported issues on this side.
If you'd like, please drop me a PM with your client code and I'll have a look at things from my end.

Got a call from help centre, who asked for my email address, so I could run some tests fir them.

Super impressed. Even if nothing improves, would stay with them, just for service levels.

Will post updates etc.

Last year I attempted in vain to get ADSL going at home through Telkom. After two weeks of waiting and nothing happening I decided to try ordering the line through Web Africa. Three days later our ADSL was up and running. I'm almost always very impressed with the service I receive from them. :)

Ran the tests, and my line was syncing at incorrect speeds, so, they tried a few things, and, cut me off.

A few mins later, I emailed from a cell c dongle, and they re-set the port. Back to just under 1 mb speed.

They say I shud get better, and have raised a fault complaint with telkom. let's Give Telkom the benefit of the doubt,
And will report back in a week.

The ADSL line is shared with a phone line I rarely use .. but, yesterday, I did pick the phone up, and there is a terrible hiss#on the line, presumably cant be good.

Had some extra low speeds last night .. down in the 0.11 mbps range, and first thing, it wouldnt let me connect, but, finally managed to, and just ran a speedtest, giving 1.28 mbps.

Still a hiss/buzz on the line .. wont be in today much, as going to the ckt (professionals expect the game to be over in 4 days, as the pitch wont allow scores much past 300).

Just an update ..

My line varies between 0.30 mbps and a high of 1.65 mbps - and the lows are infrequent, and the line is stable.

I would rate WA as 10/10, for service. I would recommend them to anyone else.

Thanks for the feedback here sportpro.
Just to confirm, everything sorted on your end hey?

Hiya,

Sorry, been away in Venda (which has surprisingly good 3g .. anyway).

On comeback, line is varying between 0.09 mb (Sat afternoon), and 1.24 (Sun 5 am).

I am not 100% convinced its a exchange issue, as, when I get the v low reading, when I try a speedtest on the
other line in my house, (Mweb), its about .50 mbps .. so, its a bit confusing.

What worries me, is that, Jhb is v quiet now, so, I would have thght, traffic should have got better in early Jan, but, it hasnt,
and the v low speeds, are worrying.

I am not aware of any Telkom initiative to upgrade the Suninghill exchange, so, will sorta work around, with the 3g alaternative,
when it gets really slow.

Cheers
