webafrica: really slow internationally

warichard said:
However, as per the SAIX notice board, it appears there is a possible cable break internationally, which is resulting in intermittent international connectivity and performance. This will have an effect on anyone on the SAIX network.

Not so, the diginet systems are not seeing packet loss - Only ADSL. Otherwise UUnet and IS would also be suffering the wonderfull 1000ms latency - however they are not.

Well, all SAIX states is:

Customers will experience intermittent connectivity to international sites.

They make no distinction as to whether it is the ADSL network only or not - however it does not seem to be having an effect on unshaped ADSL users either.

Nod, and I told them to their face they are lying :P The NOC manager i spoke to even claimed that he was not experiencing any problems to our US server!

Rupert, thanks for the helpful and professional response. That's all that's ever required.
Its a pleasure jct, and once again my humblest apologies.

I do think though that everyone's frustration levels would be decreased by keeping us informed i.e. the minute you guys know about a SAIX problem, just pop your users a 1 line mail to let us know. Then, we all shrug our shoulders and go 'oh well, Telkom strikes again!' .. instead of going, 'damn this is slow ... ftp is timing out ... I've only been with Web Africa for a short time, it must be them?'

If we know what you know when you know it (before we get frustrated) then we can rule out any possibility of it being a Web Africa issue right from the start. And even if, for any reason, something does go wrong on your side ... a 1 line mail again puts us in the picture, where we understand the problem and can work around it, together.

Think this would be possible for you guys to look at?
Thanks for the feedback and suggestion jct.

We are aware of this shortcoming and have been discussing a notification and announcement system for our customers where all customers may view planned / current maintenance and all of our services statuses through one easily accessible web interface as well as be informed via email / sms when need be. We should hopefully have something up within a few weeks, once completed we will of course inform all customers.

I gotta say that web africa have been nothing short of amazing. I've never had an unanswered call.
I phoned in last night because I couldn't connect from a mates house. Was up and running in 2 mins. (wrong username AND password - bad day!)

Cheers, Nick

fukc this saix crap. as if we dont pay enough for bandwidth, the LEAST they can do is guarantee something! im getting 1000ms pings to google on 2/4 packets and complete packet loss on the other 2  where we see the effects of this are on secure sites. its almost impossible to access, now i know the reason why i was having problems earlier on this post.

WA is the same as any SAIX Isp out there. The only difference is their customer service is of the highest standard. So there you have it.

JCT : You seem like one of those Wankers that just won't take any opinion as valid, other than your own.

I agree with this 100%, i called WA yesterday with a connection problem & within +-30seconds we had the problem sorted out

JCT, also think you are unreasonable here. Agree with others, WebAfrica's service is brilliant.

Er actually he just wasn't aware of how the reseller set up works. Is that really criminal?

He had a bad experience - he isn't saying their service is terrible, just that it was terrible at the time. Not at all unreasonable considering no one answered the phones.

Well not criminal - but nobody said that it was criminal. It is however stupid to start leveling critisism before at least making an attempt to gather relevant information.

"I am not saying you are an idiot - I am just saying that at some stage you may have been one" - No doubt it is OK for me to say this in terms of your reasoning.

JCT did seem to think that speed with WA in particular was particularly bad because of their R199 offer. This indicates that he knew enough to know about the offer and that there might be a "catch". He also stated that moving to one of the other ISP's would solve the problem.

This sort of statement is negligent. Just because your may have the capacity to move your fingers and intereact via a keyboard - dosn't mean you should do it. Until you have an informed opinion keep it to yourself. If you have questions ask them in a polite and pleasant way. Accusations need to be based on facts not some ignoramouses misconceptions.

Expect to be jumped on if you make rash uninformed sweeping statements.

Agreed. I know plenty of people who I wouldn't say are idiots, but who have difinitely done something awe-inspiringly idiotic at some point in the past.

Mistakes do happen.

My point is that this comment is uncalled for.

Anyway - Web Africa not answering their phones constitues bad service (even if it was for a short while) - I'm sure their service is usually brilliant, but JCT's experience was bad, so how is he being unreasonable?

I agree with you there, but to me it looked he was taking a guess at what a possible cause for the lousy international speeds could have been.

I myself have to agree, even though this was on a Saturday afternoon - it is unacceptable. We do also supply emergency cellphone lines which customers may call at any time (under the client service area, existing WA customers take note :)) just to help cover the occasional "cracks" a bit.

Further to our notification systems, our new phone systems are currently under development and should be in place by roughly Monday or hopefully sooner. This will vastly aid us in supplying better service and assistance to all customers!

Guys lets see you get a response from TELKOM... then you'll understand BAD SERVICE this is normal service for SA and they have responded to your query...

I'm not saying Web Africa's service is bad at all :)

In fact I plan on switching to them next month.
