However sad it is, or funny, he still has a point.

For example why do Openweb not have this star system?

They just omit they have it on their IS based accounts. You can go do testing on those accounts, and the more you download on them, the worse the performance during business hours, which is pretty much how the star system works.

No, actually not.

It is terribly frustrating to see which policies some ISP's in SA seem to pursuit. For me, this "star rating" reflects an industry that once again fails to adopt principals of "net neutrality", out of greed and failure to deliver. Some might call it "creative" business practice by Web Africa. Many here on MyBB seem to accept such practices as legit. But in the long run, it will seriously prevent internet penetration in SA!

A "star rating" is just the tip of the iceberg along with "shaping", "throttling", "bandwidth caps" etc., implemented by almost any ISP in SA.

We've discussed the our star rating system ad nauseum and how it works and why it is in place. The fact of the matter is that there is no ISP in SA that does not have an AUP in place on their uncapped accounts due to the nature of SA's internet landscape. If you have signed up for the uncapped service with us you have accepted our AUP as well as the star rating system and to be frank the star rating system is here to stay.

However, there is an alternative for a person that does not like to be throttled which is capped, especially since our capped prices are so cheap. With capped yes we have bandwidth prioritisation but you will never need to worry about am I using too much or your connection being throttled. You can use as much as your cap allows anytime you wish and for me that's leaving 'kindergarten' and stepping up into adulthood ;)

Yes maybe you have to WebAfrica users, but I for one have never heard of it before and as I posted am interested to know how it works.
Does it effect Capped users.
I was quite keen to join WebAfrica until I heard about this star rating you have and it just scared me away.

Star Rating system is only for uncapped accounts. Capped accounts doesn't need it since it uses the cap system. Pretty straight forward.

Sure, you can take his word for it...
I won't, even though I know he is the ceo of openweb, much like I don't just take the word of marketing departments for even the biggest corporates.

IMO, the decision to go this way with little stars is childish. It makes managing bandwidth a nightmare for customers. A bit like "bill shock" it isn't going to make happy faces when you get throttled.

At least it's more transparent now. Remember when IS used to apply this system, but it was all done in secret so nobody knew they were a victim of the 1 *

Openweb customer since 2011 and in my experience I have never been shaped/throttled according to my usage. Ever. And I'm a bandwidth hog (two people sharing a 1mb account).

It's actually a little curious that Openweb has managed to have their uncapped remain sustainable without throttling policies, unlike the majority of other ISPs.

No offense, but I don't see how you can be a bandwidth hog on a 1Mbps account. We can talk again when you do 2TB a month on a 10Mbps account. I can assure you, I was on a 10Mbps Openweb account, and it was shaped into the ground during business hours, which is pretty much no downloads during the day.

Because acceptable usage scales according to your line speed? Duh. 200+GB a month, almost every month is hardly something to scoff at on a 1mb account. Unless you're going to tell me the only people who get shaped/throttled at other ISPs are the 10mb customers?

They probably the 1st ones to get shaped/throttled. While 200GB is pretty good on a 1Mbps line, its not that impressive either.

I can agree with you. I've been with OpenWeb since June last year and my uncapped account has definitely been the best I've had out of all the other providers I've tried. You never have to worry about star ratings or soft caps. Maybe I've been fortunate not having speed issues that some people complain about? I'm moving to a capped product from Web Africa as my needs aren't as great as they were, but if I was to go uncapped again I would most definitely consider OpenWeb as one of my top choices, plus their support always reply to emails extremely quickly!
 
Yeah, I've also never experienced the slow daytime speeds people are talking about on Openweb. I don't know if I'm just lucky either, but my account runs about 2/3rds of its normal speed during the day and full speed after hours.
