Webafrica website and hosting all down

yeah sites may be up but speed is degraded with regards to latency.

Hmmm, that's interesting. I was wondering why Hetzner's home site is always up when my site is down!

Confirmed with Nexus, there is a majour problem in the cape town Verizon data centre where apparently thousands of SA servers are housed. Apparently they (Verizon) were doing routine maintenance when something went south and the backup geni's decided they dont like working on weekends.

I dont think the post about it taking 4-8 hours can be accurate since it really shouldnt take more than an hour or two at most to at least get their generator working? (not that I know much about them). It amazes me how half our country's sites go down with one switch of a button, scary stuff!!

I was planning on working on one of my sites. Guess I can now go for a beer instead!

Does anyone believe in regular equipment tests anymore? Maybe TEST generators with and without load, TEST UPS's ... one would think a datacenter like GW would be up to scratch.

F*ing useless if you ask me, there is no excuse.

poop hits the fan sumtimes

Yeah, and usually theres someone's head on a plate. "sorry" doesn't do it for me in situations like this. Although Hetzner did forewarn us of the maintenance, since they knew weeks in advance, why didn't they ensure the generators were working and backup systems were in place?

Weekend or not, 4-8 hours of downtime is appalling. "Oh sorry" just doesn't cut it.

Hi All,

Just from our side - Verizon was indeed down as per the network maintenance msg. This caused our entire local network to be inaccessible on Saturday morning.

I agree 100% that this was completely unacceptable, and we intend to follow this up first thing tomorrow and acquire a proper explanation as to why the equipment was not tested on a regular basis, as well as assurance that this will not recur in the future.
