When I was still running Win7 I bought a webcam from a Telkom shop, for use with Skype. It worked perfectly under Win7. Now I have removed Win7, and run Unbuntu 11.04, I can't get the webcam to work with Skype (in fact can't get it to work at all).

Unfortunately the Telkom-branded webcam does not have the original manufacturer's name on the body, and the only identifier I can see is a barcode with: UCAM3300510001288 underneath.

Can anyone suggest where I could find an Ubuntu driver for this - I have googled with no success

Edit: Sorry I was telling you to use device manager after removing windows, duh!

Open a terminal and type in lsusb -v and paste the output here. (Assuming it's a usb webcam)

Also, download Cheese from the Software Centre and see if it works in there?

That yielded a long result - tried to paste it here and ...

The text that you have entered is too long (20689 characters). Please shorten it to 10000 characters long.

Can I PM the output to you?

It is a USB webcam

That is not the total output, some of the info is missing.

The terminal is cutting of the output at around 500 lines it seems (quite normal on a standard installation), you can rectify this in the terminal settings or just do the following:
sudo lsusb -v > usb.txt

Now paste the usb.txt file where ponder mentioned.

All this does is pipe all the info to a text file.

Tried the command ( sudo lsusb -v > usb.txt ) and no result at all ... just get ..
alan@alan-Precision-M90:~$ sudo lsusb -v > usb.txt
[sudo] password for alan:
alan@alan-Precision-M90:~$ sudo lsusb -v > usb.txt
alan@alan-Precision-M90:~$
... and a search after running the command, for the file 'usb.txt' yields no result.
I made sure I entered the correct password requested, tried it several times

Just type lsusb, the second part of that command pushes the results to a text file, which is why you are not getting the results displayed on screen.

Type:
less usb.txt

This should show you the file with all the info in it. Up or down with arrows or with pageup and pagedown keys to navigate. Q to quit.

This webcam supposedly works in Ubuntu.

Have you installed 'cheese' yet? If not install it and see if it picks up the camera.

Yes - Cheese is installed .. just shows "no device found" have tried plugging the USB cam into the port, and then starting Cheese, as well as plugging cam into port while Cheese is running - no success

Try installing camorama and see if that gives you anything.

If that does not work then I'm at loss and we'll have to try a different approach

Also open a new thread at ubuntu forums.
State that you are using Ubuntu 11.04, got cheese installed and the webcam is "Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0c45:62f1 Microdia"

@ Ponder .. will be away for a day or two but will follow your suggestion re: the Ubuntu forum when I have a chance. Thanks for the help to you and others - your patience has been a virtue for Ubuntu newbies such as I
