Hey guys,
Im planning on building a portfolio website with my demoreel/ art etc on it, but
Im having a tough decision choosing the correct host.

Things I require,
150mb + space minimum
10GB International transfer (with cheap options to buy more)
I already have a domain
Must be a local hosting company with great support/quality

Some of the hosts which ive looked into and from what other people say are accountable:
Hetzner.co.za (Micro Pro)
Texo.co.za (all-in-one)
Elitehost.co.za (S2 standard)

So with your guys experience who do you think I should go with?

I used to use Hetzner but moved myself and all my clients over to realwebspace 2 years ago and have had no problems to date.

never had downtime, competitive pricing and Paul (owner) is always available to answer questions.

Basically yo should look around and choose what will be right for you

try looking at helkom for a list

Well, if you want to have a cheap host, cheapest currently is Web Africa (for local hosting) who blows everyone out of the water (including afrihost) with their hosting packages.

However, I've heard some horror stories about them, but mostly from resellers.

Well, I checked your website and I would never recommend anyone to use a webhost who doesn't even register a street address on the whois and who doesn't provide any information about where the servers are located or where the business is actually located - neither do we even have an owner's name.

Further there are no terms of service on your website.

As a designer I am always on the lookout for new, good webhosting companies but unfortunately due to the above I would never in good conscience resell for you, or recommend you.

Hi fighthall

I am really not sure how people have been able to offer you hosting when the requirements are pretty vague:
  • When you say local hosting are you wanting your site in South Africa or just a company that is in ZA but could be hosted internationally?
  • Do you need any scripting language support on the server PHP, ASP?
HostingHelp (still in Beta) has a lot of plans that might interest you, and you can compare them. The rest of you go and post some hosting reviews wont you :D

Hi there...

We are a small company providing hosting and custom software / web development.

I'd be more than happy to ask some of my clients to answer your emails about my service if you'd like, let them sell my service for me!

PS, just to preempt Chelle. I'm sure you'll think from a whois lookup of www.softsmart.co.za that this is a new new new business. Its not really. I just had to let the domain expire because it was the easiest way of getting it back from godaddy when I used to host with them.... The only proof I can offer is if you look at the dates that some articles were submitted on digg.. http://digg.com/search?s=softsmart.co.za

The concern I raised wasn't about the age - even if you were new I would have no problem with that. We all start off somewhere. I do, however, think it's important that companies should be open about who the owner is, where the business is situated etc. It firstly shows that as a company owner you're willing to take responsibility and that people can contact you. Cell phone numbers, email addresses and PO Boxes can indicate the possibility of a fly by night.

I recommend to all my clients for whom I design, to have a decent About Us page - it's a good business principle. And when I do any business over the web, I make sure of those details before I hand over my hard earned cash too.

Personally I use <url=http://texo.co.za/welcome/aff.php?aff=078>Texo</url>.
When someone asks for a recommendation, posting your hidden affiliate link is not really honest, it is only self interest and not a recommendation at all. How can what you say be trusted?

Don't see anything wrong with that...

Obviously with Drake2007 affiliation with the company he has some confidence in the service provider. Why shouldn't he get some $$ for a recommendation??

If I see a recommendation which includes an affiliate link I won't even visit the site. It's kind of spammy if you don't at least tell people you're an affiliate. Also at least state why you 're making a recommendation - aside from the fact that you're an affiliate.
