I am building a asp.net website which needs a ms sql server .
i am looking for hosting..

I also need a auto email responder.. these would probally have to run on windows..

What kinds host would you guys recommend ? VPS ?

web africa windows hosting

would not look @ a VPS for just 1 site unless you have huge plans for it - start simple and upgrade from there as your site grows - WA have a neat control panel and have had excellent up time with them

Would this solution allow me to run a thread that need to acces the database and reply to emails ?

yes no problem chat with them

There are many options open to you for windows hosting, but as AWD replied VPS would be totally overkill. actually if you are new and small look at international hosts as you can not beat them for price.

Note: @AWD and @Sup3rCow have posted affiliate links so if you follow those links and sign up they make money, but can you really trust the advice?

Let us all know who chose and why, so many of these threads left open for ever and a day.

Absolutely after 5 years and going strong ;)

For sure for other people to learn from and gain knowledge ;)

Not good advise @ all for someone starting out - go local and pay the extra R10 a month - that way when you stuck you can call ;) not fun doing international calls when you need urgent assistance :D

I've been with justhost.com for a year now.

I've had no real issues with them and everything works alright. Speed is good, features-for-price are excellent and the support is usually pretty brisk although it leaves a bit to be desired - multiple respondents and a lower level of IT knowledge.

You can pay for better support though.

So I'm not posting any affiliate links up here... :)

I have done a little research on hosting lately and your choice of host is very much dependent on your choice of development tools.

Webafrica are AWESOME! except for the fact that they are stuck in the dark ages when it comes to supporting ASP.NET 4.0 and Ms SQL 2008 / 2008 r2. I have a reseller business running with them. They are more expensive than most other hosters but their support is legendary! And if those are the technology options you've chosen then DO NOT allow yourself to be convinced to downgrade your site to SQL 2005. Thats just dufusville.

If however you are using more up to date technologies then afrihost presents a pretty kick ass package. Check out their Windows Pro hosting. They are members of Microsoft's Webspark program because they offer support for the latest technologies. I also used them to host a Linux/J2EE site once upon a time and their support was not bad at all.

It also depends how much support you want from your hosting provider.

Good luck with your choices and also with your site (As long as it doesn't compete with mine :p:p )

I started a small hosting company with a colleague a couple of years ago and have subsequently moved on, but I'm still using ynosite.com's full trust .Net 4.0 and SQL Express DB hosting whenever I build a new site or application.

I will probally need ASP.NET 4 and SQL 2008.. Us web africa currently for static hosting... but i need to make a plan..

It depends what u intend to do with the website I would recommend a shared hosting plan as you can always move this to a vps once you're site has more than 10 people online otherwise you wouldstart to see lagging.

for a .co.za domain I would agree on what he said .www.paradigmsolutions.co.za/. is a good host with live chat support.best would be to find a company that host shared, vps and dedicated hostings in south africa as it is easy to upgrade you're account throught that same company than to move it to a newhost everytime you want to go bigger. there are a few but to my findings no good

Afrihost is also good.

Im looking 4wrd to having my own website, any suggestion about isp's that provide free hosting

Afrihost is Microsoft Certified with their hosting - doubt you can get better in SA. They are also the only [MS] certified hosting company in SA. WebAfrica is ok, but Afrihost is cheaper and they give you more.

WebAfrica hosts you on Win2003 with IIS6 and SQL2005. AfriHost gives you Win2008 with IIS 7 and SQL 2008. Look at that, rather go AfriHost. I am in the process of moving away from WebAfrica because the can't give me SQL 2008 - a dealbreaker for me.

When with afrihost as a trial as I am using Razor.. might have to move all hosting to them
