Hi all,

I was recently looking at providing an end to end solution for people wanting to create a website or e-commerce site, and not exactly sure what to charge them at, this is pure web development and no hosting involved, maybe a few scenarios of maintenance. any idea on how and how much the market currently costs this service at?

TIA

It all depends on what their requirements are or how complicated the projects will be.

what are the requirements of a basic e-commerce site?

I would say somewhere between 20K and 500K is fair.

anyway, this is easy to figure out. take how much you want to charge per hour/day/week and multiply that by how many hours/days/weeks it will take you.

if you can't do that, then I doubt you are in the position to actually be able to deliver

Is it a bespoke build or using an existing CMS?

Break it down into the tasks required and then hours per task.

Eventually you get a feel for it and what is realistic

Bespoke build but also asking as I would like to do these projects on the side more often.

You'll be doing end to end, whether you like it or not, oh and make sure you charge for support, maintenance and training. Modularise your solution and be upfront about the costs, invoicing them every step of the way.

Spec out what each module costs, to build, to maintain and to support.

Clients want a turnkey solution for free, support is a favour and lifetime maintenance included in the initial price. And also make sure you know a guy at the small claims court.

Like some of the guys here can attest, dealing with clients is not easy, and the "more flexible" you appear the more they will take advantage.

Build yourself a library of functional parts that serve various needs. A payment module, a cms, a hosting and installation script, automate everything as far as possible.

Unless you also want to learn the hard way, charge more, not less. And if someone negotiates too liberally on your rates, tell them to find someone else.

They will take weeks of your time for less than half your rent / bond in a month. Rather less paying clients than more bs chancers.

C.R.E.A.M or nothing.

Why build this yourself?

It literally takes minutes to get a woocomerce site up and running.
Time is then spent on making the site fit the client’s CI and building any extras which really are unique and require custom dev/integration
