Website designer

Good SEO is expensive because it's an ongoing process and not a "fire and forget".
Sure, using the correct tags (header tags, alt's on images, etc) is a once offish thing, tweaking the content every week and adjusting keywords is an ongoing process, or?

Only would see "maintenance" being costly for updates, once its setup its mostly just there.. a simple htaccess file and url rewrite is good for links and all meta tags etc coded. So if you actually pay a proper designer, basic SEO should kind of be included.. I cant see how people charge thousands.. except if you want them to micro manage it for you...

R200 for unlimited maintenece requests. Haha that made me laugh.

Would you buy a R5000 car to commute to work with everyday? Why on earth would you think spending R1200 on your business's internet face would be a good idea.
Think about how many man hours it would take to get to R1200 of a professionals time? 3 maybe 4......
How much time does having an initial meeting and then go and come up with a draft design. Then follow up, agree, implement, feedback, UAT, etc etc

Ever heard of pre-made website templates? Also known as themes? That is what I use for my self and other non-profit organizations that i create free websites for. I currently own 6 blogs, I just install a template on my blogging platform and then use CSS, PHP and some JAVA script to make a site look different from the rest.
So your meetings, design drafts, follow up etc are really not necessary - pity I cant tell you everything i do to simplify the process.

>>About unlimited requests - Requests I am talking about are just small stuff that usually wouldnt even take me 5min to do. Stuff such as "changing font color for the whole site", "put an image on the header", " change titles size on sidebar" etc. It does not mean changing the whole design of a website or doing any other drastic change.

>> Proffesional? No I am not! I am still an IT student. Hence the price and free website design for non profit org. I am trying to build a good reputation for my self, a good CV, a large portfolio for when (if I ever) decide to start a web design business.

It's Javascript.
Not "JAVA script".
;)

Aah crap, forgot to mention the part where I'm actually looking to offer the service. :D Otherwise thanks anyways, saw the going rates.

Cool!
Know what? The thing is, I know a lot of people in SA lack information or rather resources to information. So I was just trying to help someone who could have been one of them, but clearly you not - great!

That is why SA web designers are ripping unwary people a lot! I remember about 4 years back when I wanted a blog, asked around for quotes i received prices ranged from R4 500 to R6 200! Even on this age, people are still charging that much and more! I ended up having to learn by my self because I just did not have that kind of money. But hey, through trial and error, I launched my first blog.

Web design for me is totally not a business, yet! Just lending a helping hand, that's all there is to it!

I thought you might reply with something like this, and it will work to a degree.

The expensive part is when the company doing the SEO does keyword research and gets copywriters in to tailor the content around those keywords to ensure your site is in the top x. The keyword research alone could take a number of man hours, all needing to be paid for, then the copywriter(s), etc.

To add to the cost there would probably be some sort of A/B testing, more content needed for that and more man hours.
From this kind of approach I can see how the costs can easily escalate.

Your reply does put more perspective on things, thanks, and I hope you do well!

News to me, ban for posting work history? please elaborate

Everyone says SEO is expensive, its not ;)

Already received an infraction notice for exactly that!

By the way, SEO is expensive, or at least if done right. I do my own SEO/SEM and it is time consuming, and I do not put enough time as I should be. If I could, I wouldn't get anything done. So for the time it consumes, it deserves to be expensive.
That is if you do not differentiate between SEO and SEM. *I know they are different - hope you do get the point*

If you asked me for a blog, I'd probably quote you R30 000 to R60 000 depending on what you wanted.
And it would be wordpress.

Why so much?
Because I wouldn't be giving you a wordpress template with the default images and layout.
As _kabal_ said, there would be a number of meetings, professional designers involved, etc.

We'd have a startup meeting to get the project started, get the req's and specs, etc.

The customer isn't aware of what can be done as websites or blog development isn't their speciality, they just use them. (I use a toilet but I'm no plumber).
4 hours at R300 - R1200.

Wordpress is pretty straight forward, a design for your homepage, one for single posts, one for post archive, a static content page and probably 1 or 2 others. A well priced designer would probably get that to you for around R10 000.

That leaves me with R20 000.

Call your coding time at 4 to 6 hours per page (at R300 to R450 an hour) and that comes out at an average thumbsuck of R1800 a page. Multiple that by your 6 pages and you're on R10 800, leaving you with R9 200.
Then other small things, adding to the style to make it future 'proof', adding in some custom widgets and configuring them - 8 hour, R2400, left - R6 800.

If content needs to be loaded and specifically styled then that takes time too but it could also be done by the client after

Client gets shown the site and aahh - we forgot the styling on the search page, plus the design that was signed off isn;t quite what you're looking for anymore and you need 3 items tweaked.

So, add in search page and tweak some items and 8 hours later, all done - R2 400, R4 400 left.

You can see how the 'massive amount' or R30 000 is quite quickly chipped away for a "simple blog site".

It's one thing to ask someone for an off the shelf template, it's another entirely asking for a bespoke website.
