All depends on what you need from the site. Is it purely a information site? Basic about us, contact us etc? The nice thing about Wordpress templates is it gives you the power to easily manage the content without the need to pay a developer for it. On the other hand, when you decide to create more functionality on your site for example order history for a shop of some sort it might not be the correct choice!
I don't think there is anything to be afraid of when requesting the site. Just a note, make sure you are very involved with the development process. Ensure that you get weekly updates, daily would be better. If you come across a company that doesn't want it done this way, keep on looking as they will charge you more and more money as the changes roll in.
