Hi guys/gals I’m looking to put up a little webpage for a non-profit organisation, I will be doing it for free as this is my contribution to them. It will be a very very basic site with just the background info, upcoming/news activities and contacts.

Now panel of experts would you please assist me with the following: What is the cheapest way to register a domain and host a site like this? Where can I get nice free site templates for a basic site like this, should I use frontpage?

Any other advice, i have hosted a website on our intranet before but never on the net, so i have a fairly good idea of what has to happen but u guys are the experts.

Many thanks moklet... Oh I forgot something HOSTING!
Looking at webafrica.

For non profit organizations you should be able to register a .org.za domain for free. As long as you can prove that it is non profit.

http://org.za/

I can then suggest maybe making use of Joomla to do the design.

http://www.joomla.org/

IT will make it easier to design the page as well change it later when you need it.

For the hosting, as Joomla uses about 14MB when extracted I could suggest looking at something like the Basic Hosting with this company. Very good prices :)

Just also want to add that .za.net domains are free domains, but sometimes it takes up to 2 months to register :) The same goes for any DNS changes you want to make on the domain.

"Have at least two nameservers configured to respond authoritatively for the domain."

One of the lines in the domain application form, should I get the hosting before i register the domain?

Hi Vegeta,

That is correct. The name servers need to first be configured, which means the account must be set up first.

Great to hear about your project and your kind heart. Remember to contact the web host that you have in mind and let them know that it is for a non - profit agency as they may cut you a better deal.

Best of luck!

See below:

My advice, register yourself a .za.net domain for free, here are the basic steps:
  1. Check if the domain name you want is available, e.g. akash.za.net, using this link: http://www.za.net/whois.html
  2. Read the following so you understand the process etc: http://www.za.net/howto.html
  3. Once you have found a .za.net domain name that you want to register, go to http://zoneedit.com/ and create a free a/c there to host the DNS for your 'soon' to be registered .za.net domain name, add the domain name by adding a new zone, take note of the DNS servers & IP addresses, ignore the fact that zoneedit.com will complain that the domain name is not yet registered.
  4. Now do the actual domain name registration, using the following url: http://www.za.net/register.html, be sure to enter the DNS servers & IP addresses you got from adding your zone on ZoneEdit.com.
  5. Be patient, and check where your domain registration is in the queue using the following link: http://www.za.net/status.html - it usually takes ~3 weeks, but then it is a free domain name...

Thank you so much guys!! Its all much appreciated.
