Website Help

Joomla is really powerful, but can get a bit more complicated.

With regards to your original requirements:
Firstly, they want a website that is a source of information about their organisation. They also want to be able to update the website themselves with pictures and info about regular events etc.

I vote Wordpress, should be able to do everything you need, its easier to configure, and there are hundreds of thousands of gorgeous themes that are damn easy to use. I also believe there are more forums/places to find help with Wordpress, just because its the most popular CMS.

Why not create a free blog on their server and give it a test run: http://wordpress.com/

Personally, I liked working with Drupal cms. Took me about 2 days to go through all the basics of php (although I'm fully geared towards .NET development) and I was ready to go.

The nice thing about drupal is that with some hosts (ex. WebAfrica), you can have it preinstalled, then just copy the project/updates from your local workstation via ftp and viola.

Basically if you know some php and a bit of he drupal api, you can design your entire front end and use plugins (pretty much anything from a calendar plugin to a css/jscript minifier and compressor) without much trouble.
Also the permission based access is quite nice for setting up accounts to add/edit pages etc. without giving them access to settings and such which they don't have to work with. I used eclipse galileo as IDE, made life easier, oh and WAMP :P.

Good luck!

Thanks guys for all your advice, I think I will give Wordpress a go.

For the hosting, is it a good idea to go for Texo's Wordpress MAX for the hosting? Are the themes good?

Just for interest sake, why do you / they not appoint a professional to get the job done?

I'm cheaper. :D Also they are someone in my complex so I get practice and they get a cheaper website.

Good on you. It's stuff like this you need in the beginning, if only to put on your CV later. Bear that in mind while you are working on this. It's the reference you'll use later in your portfolio.

Thanks. For the hosting I think I shall go with texo. Should I go for just their standard hosting or the specialised Wordpress one?

If you want to be hacked on a regular basis, go for Joomla, by all means. The number of complaints I have heard from people regarding Joomla is ridiculous. Wordpress is by far a better system to set up and easy to use. There are tons of helpful sites at the click of a Google search button. If you specifically want to look at it as a CMS, there are a couple of tweaks and you are set, while still being able to have the blog functionality for a news and events page.

Yeah, there are always different options you can go with. I recommend playing around with both and getting a bit of a feel for what they can do. Then you can make your own decision for whatever works best for you. Both are good options, but Joomla is much more powerful and if the site needs to be enhanced, Joomla will certainly cater for just about anything.

I agree. I must admit though as a beginer wordpress is much easier to use and will cater for your needs. at th end of the day it will probably come down to the end user what is easier but in general most will agree wordpress is. I suggest you play around with both a little. I am very new in the game but the advice I found here and around the net is awesome.

If you going to use wordpress then the wordpress hosting solution for me seems so much better. Ease of use , texa is a solid option. I have been investigating options re site design and hosting for the last few weeks now and wordpress along with a hosting solution like texo offers is a great way about doing things. I dont think you will regret it.

I am with elitehosting.co.za and i chose them because they caterred more for my needs as a reseller account for now. Both are good options in my opinion and both offer great support.
