Hi I am trying to host my site on my own server at home with xampp.

But I've hit a wall and I can't go any further.

This is what I've done so far:

1. I registered the domain with web africa.
2. I created a host with dyndns.
3. I asked webafrica to create a CNAME rule to point to the dyndns host.
4. I set up xampp on my pc and I can acess my site via loacalhost.

What now?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OH, btw, you need to map port 80 as a static route to your machine if you're running a router (which I assume you have) otherwise the incoming HTTP request won't know where to go as no internal machine has requested the traffic.

Yes it is only one site, and how would I go about mapping the port?

BTW, I have a dynamic IP. That is why I am using dyndns.

Mostly this problem is related to port forwarding on your router, you will probably have to use port forwarding to forward Port 80 to your computer's server port.

Try working through the most common questions first, to resolve the problem.

1) Can you access the web server from your own LAN?
I see you mentioned you could use http://localhost but does it work when using http://name.dyndns.org?

2) Are you testing with the DynDNS hostname from outside your LAN?
Please provide us with the link so we can test this aswell.

3) Does your ISP block port 80/TCP to you (to stop you running a web server)? Contact them to check this.

4) Are you getting any specific error message which might help in troubleshooting this? Access denied error? Page cannot be found error? etc.

Could you possibly PM your Webafrica Client code and your contact number so I can assist you?

1) Yes I can.
2) Yes I am, but it can't be accessed. The link is gamersdomain.webhop.net
3) Not sure, I'll find out.
4) The error message is "Network Timeout, The operation timed out when attempting to contact gamersdomain.webhop.net."

But I think that my port forwarding is wrong, I'll try re doing it to see if that doesn't work.

Why is it illegal?

If it is I never knew that it was.

Ok, looks like I got it to work, but now its showing the xampp welcome screen, how do I change that?

Warning: XAMPP is not intended for production or live www use!

It was made for developers using it in a development environment. XAMPP is configured to be as open as possible and to allow the web developer to do anything he wants. For development environments this is great but in a production environment it could be fatal.

Make sure you enable the minor security at least: http://[SERVER]/security

For optimal security, install all the components (apache, php, etc etc) separately like a proper web server.

It is not illegal (in the criminal sense) - Its just goes against the terms & conditions (ie contract) you agree to with some ISP's.

In most cases though - if you are happy to deal with the shoddy upload speeds and reliability you get on DSL and you are paying for all bandwidth you consume the ISP's don't really complain.
