Website hosting on Diginet?

Hi there,

Was pondering about the idea of running a webhosting server off a diginet line... would this be possible? Considering the unreliability of Adsl, I suppose only a diginet line would work? Or would it be too slow?

Any advice?

Thanks

I did this for years. The question is does your diginet line go to your ISP? Just remember that a diginet line is a point to point connection. I.E. between 2 offices, or from your office to your ISP (commonly know as a leased line).
We had a 512 k line going to MTN Business (ex Verizon/UUNET) , and the diginet portion was about R 5000 per month, and the data portion was about R 17000 p/m. It was uncapped, and guaranteed at 1:1 contention ratio, unless there is a network problem. We pushed about 115 G/B per month thru the line.
You must just remember that hosting on a 512 k line can be slow. If it is interactive site then you might be asking for trouble.
If you really want to do your own hosting then rater put a server down at IS, MTN etc. I know that MTN was offering 2 options, either a fixed bandwidth cost, that was at R 17 000 for a 512 k link (can obviously scale to what ever size you want), or you can have a 100 m/bit connection to their backbone, but you get charged per GB, pricing a year ago was at R120 per/GB.

So hosting your own lite locally is a lot of fun, but it can be fu*^&#^ng expensive.

Damn, I thought diginet is a dedicated uncapped line which includes your bandwidth :/ I was hoping to have something where we can manage our own hardware and network and not rely on a company like MTN... but seeing that you still have to pay (up to R17 000) on top of your diginet line for bandwidth, it doesnt make it very viable.

How about multiple 4MB Business Unshaped Uncapped account with Cisco router and static IP's? Would that work? The problem I in general have with co-location/local hosting is, you pay like R800 per month for rackspace, which includes 5000MB traffic - thereafter it becomes expensive.

We have very secure offices so putting down a few servers in a dedicated server room isn't a problem, only problem is connectivity to the outside world :/

Is there no other way?

I have a 512 diginet line to Telkom. Completely unshaped and uncapped. R6000 though :(

Well, to make it cost effective, it would mean hosting at least 12 webhosting servers - would that work? I'm looking for something that would cost up to R400 / R500 per server. If Adsl wasnt so unstable, I would easily get a few Adsl lines and run the servers on Adsl.

How can I start my own lil DC? :/ Just need connectivity :/

You have more than one option :

1. Host it yourself. This means you have the headache of getting connectivity, stable power and the such, not to mention having to put the server somewhere where it can't get stolen or tinkered with.
2. Rent space on a server somewhere with a reputable company. You get what you pay for. Bandwidth overseas is cheap.
3. Plonk your own server down at MTN (as per the second post).

With 2 and 3 you don't have the issues with hardware, upgrades, line issues, power issues etc. You only need to push your content for world+dog to look/laugh at.

I would like to host it myself, but just trying to find out if there is any decent, but cost effective, way to get your servers online. The rest (security, etc) is not a problem. Hardware is relatively cheap, place 15 servers in a dedicated server room (in office) and connect them... problem is.. connect them to Adsl? Diginet?

What would you do if you want to start a mini data centre for 15 servers? Dont want to pay R800 for co location hosting and only get 5000MB traffic included.

NICHE

This scenario is a huge void / niche waiting to be filled by someone with the product and price to match.

With ALL the new marine cables and so much terrestrial fibre being put in there may be other options

TELKOM have stuff they do not advertise -- SHDSL (IF you are on the same physical exchange -- use SAIX )

Try your metro if they are running "Metro-Ethernet"

Try NEOTEL ( have fibre all over now )

Try INFRACO ( used to be able to get Diginet lines from Transtel in the old days )

Try Vodacom BUSINESS

Try MTN BUSINESS ( for connectivity NOT hosting )

Any of the big time players with their OWN cable infrastructure and FIBRE

Have you looked at Frame Express ????

Please let me know what you discover -- as I say -- I think a segment waiting to be "exploded"

at work we have a 2mb/2mb diginet line to IS. Speeds are awesome and latencies are even better, 5ms to local servers.

The problem : R100 000pm (if not more)

http://www.speedtest.net/result/926168406.png this is me doing this test at the office with about 50 users connected at the same time, i can redo this test afterhours if interested.

Regards,
