right so i taught my self html and css what not and i am looking to go further and learn other languages, but at the moment i am looking into doing a website but not sure how to make this (explained below) happen with the code.

right so basically the client would need to going into their site straight through a web browser and have the ability to edit pages and sections within the website. i have found some stuff out there such as cms and other small tutorials.

but...

all of these options dont give me the exact way in which client would need to update the site. what they want is more of a blog style type update. so in essence what i was thinking was to make a div into a template then place into the site, therefore allowing them to add lets say a picture, text and a link or whatever, but then it doesnt delete the previous content, it would need to just be added.

is there a term for what i am looking to do or a tutorial you could help me out with.

sorry if i am all over the place its just pretty hard to describe what i am talking bout.

Seems like you are making more work for yourself. Something like Wordpress, which is not my first choice of CMS, is really simple and easy to use for the client. Changing photos are dead easy to do. You will need to know a bit of php to do the theming part but the rest is really easy for the client to make changes.

I think something like Adobe Contribute may be able to do what you need it to do. Here you can put in restrictions etc. But you would have to have Dreamweaver to design the site, and also purchase Adobe Contribute to make the changes.

See these video tutorials to give u some idea on what it can do:

oo nice utube channel

But ye 5mbezchr that requirement is exactly up wordpress’s alley

I get frustrated thou- once someone takes the effort for learn semantic html css – you soon realize that CMS's are more widely used

Wordpress is great for a lot of reasons. You don't necesarily have to have a blog-looking site as most themes out there were designed to make the 'Wordpress blog' look like an actual website and not just a 'blog'.

Nice thing about Wordpress is the fact that it's so SEO friendly it's crazy. You can even integrate it with your social network profiles such as Facebook pages and Twitter profiles. My standard WP setup always allows for automatic 'tweets' and FB posts right after new content gets published on the site.

Works like a charm and generates traffic while you sleep!

great guys thanx so much for the help will definitely look into all of the suggestions, just one question with word press is it possible for the client to migrate their existing domain name to wordpress and/or is it possible to have a wordpress site but without wordpress anywhere in the url?

wordpress is available for download to be setup on your own server, servers with cpanel normally have a quick install option under fantastico

Was in same boat as you 5mbezchr, after learning some html & getting site up discovered the wonders of CMS.
Wordpress & Joomla is what i started learning them / customise & works just great.

If you download ubuntu server edition you get apache, php and mysql, amongst other things. Then google "php mysql" and you will get tutorials on how to code a site. If you already have programming experience php is easy to learn.

Get into the style sheets etc once you have the basics.
