Just wondering when you'd want an entire server? Is it mainly if you need HDD space?

when you running a website the size of nedbank.co.za that has about 10 000 users come onto it daily and even more during pay day times. further more it depends on the back end and server applications required.

also maybe for security reasons you may want the website on one server.

but in this day n age it is not hard to build your own box and have some kind of agreement with your ISP. it certainly helps for development.

Maybe you want to run apps which are not installed on shared hosting packages or you run procesor intensive applications, or your require certain environmental vars & settings. So there can be a variety of reasons. Space is the least of them.
